Colin Report 2 Jan 2013 15:31

Does anyone know of the whereabouts of any members (wife/children) of Reginald Charter's family whose mother lived on Cambridge Street, Ottawa in the 1940's? Reg served with the Canadian forces in the UK in Hampshire during 1942-46 and presumably returned to Ottawa and his family towards the end of 1946. He became a close friend of my mother Doris Honour who died in 2005. I'm looking to share photographs and information.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 2 Jan 2013 17:03

Is it likely to be a problem or shock to his Canadian family if he is married? What happened in Hampshire, stayed in Hampshire, as it were.

There is this entry on the ER

Canada, Voters Lists, 1935-1980 about Reginald Charter
Reginald Charter
Location: Ottawa, Ontario
Occupation: Build.man
Electoral District: Ottawa East
Year: 1968
Apt 502
Rockcliffe Arms, Springfield Road

Justina Charter, housewife, sharing the same address

There is no R Charter listed on www.whitepages.ca, a Canadian on-line phone book, in Ottawa, but there is a J Charter.

As your mother has passed away, would he have been about the same sort of age and if so, what would his guesstimated yob be?

Colin

Colin Report 4 Jan 2013 19:18

I would think he was slightly older than my mother so I would estimate his yob as being about 1918 or even a year or two earlier..
I don't think the family is likely to be 'shocked' by my enquiries because certainly Reg's mother was in communication with my mother (in 1946) and his wife will have known about Doris.
I know they had a daughter who must have been born about 1940 going by the photograph I have of her which was sent to my mother- but sadly no name.

Margee,
This is fabulous stuff! Having read the article and the information about his probable death I am feeling much closer to finding the family. I seem to remember that Justina Charter#s death was also reported in the Ottawa Citizen in 2005 so perhaps I shall yet hear from her daughter!
Thank you again.
Colin :-)

A report here of Justia's sister's wedding. Mrs. Justina Charter was matron of honour and Miss Patricia Charter was junior bridesmaid:

Margee (or anyone else),
Do you know how to tap into Canadian 'Marriages' list? I'm sure Patricia Charter married so would like to know her married name and any other details I can get.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 11 Jan 2013 15:10

I think Patricia's marriage would be much too recent to be online anywhere.

Colin

Colin Report 14 Jan 2013 18:34

Perhaps it's time to leave it- although having come so far after so long I'm reluctant to do so. This is probably my last chance.

Still trying to find Patricia (Pat) in Ottawa- maiden name 'Charter'; must have married in mid 1960's because now has 4 children and several grandchildren. Father: Reginald (Reg) Mother: Justine (Tina). Anyone know anything?

MargaretM Report 18 Jan 2013 23:24

Just wondering how you know she has 4 children and several grandchildren when you don't know who she married?

Colin

Colin Report 19 Jan 2013 10:31

From the notice of her mother's funeral (Justina/Tina) in November 2005 In Ottawa Citizen :
' Cherished mother of Pat (David). Grandma to four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren'. Doesn't suggest in any way that Pat(ricia) had any brothers or sisters..

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 19 Jan 2013 10:35

Obituaries often given the surname of a relative in brackets. David might be Patricia's married surname, but on the other hand, it could be the name of her OH.

Colin

Colin Report 11 Mar 2013 09:41

Well, I tried David as Patricia's married name, found TWO possibles in Ottawa via internet and sent a letter; both were returned as 'Address Incomplete'- I had street names but no number of house, etc. Obviously Canadian mail is less likely to 'look around' than here in GB. Disappointed.

I am the granddaughter of Reginald Charter.I found you request for family information. My mother is Patricia Stimpson who is the daughter of Reginald Charter. We found your post when we googled my grandfather to learn more about his service records. I noticed that you felt we should have been aware of your mother/you. It was a suprise to my mother as she thought she was an only child. Please respond to me is you are interested in communicating with myself or my mother

That's fantastic, Malette! I strongly suggest that you click on Colin's name and send a personal message. He's probably not still checking this thread after 5 months. I'm sure he'd be thrilled to hear from you.

Welcome to the Boards Malette.

Don't read too much into the discussion - its more likely that they were Pen Pals rather than anything else.

It doesn't look as if Colin is a regular poster on the boards, although hopefully he still has the same email address as a few months ago.

Send him a PM (Personal Message). GR will notify him about it
