If George married in Plymouth, and married between 1924 and 1950 (for the first time), and does not have a middle name, then free bmd would give this as the most likely:
Marriages Mar 1932
Ellis Gwendoline R White Plymouth 5b 525
White George Ellis Plymouth 5b 525

But free bmd only gives a daughter born in 1949 in Plymouth (Wendy S), so a long time after the marriage.

Lots of children as possibles if born elsewhere.

Unfortunately no death for Gwendoline R White showing in Plymouth or elsewhere.

Added:
But as they were divorced, she could have married again.
And this looks like her second marriage

There is a birth for White/Ellis in Devonport in September 1932, for a daughter.

Worth considering?

You can find her on free bmd.

Also a likely marriage for her on free bmd in Plymouth.

Hi, I certainly think your reply at 06.11 is correct. I always knew his second wife as my Auntie Ellen, however, her niece on her mother's side always called her Auntie Bessie. Her maiden name was Mills, but I had no idea of her first married name, i.e. Coles as you show above.

Regarding George's first marriage, you show a possible daughter Wendy born 1949. However, I find this very unlikely, after his divorce he moved in with our family. I was born 1943. When I was six, I can remember him being around, I cant imagine them having a daughter in 1949....(unless, of course, it wasn't his daughter).

Thank you so much for all your assistance.

Have you looked up that daughter born in Devonport in 1932?

Thanks, assuming I have found the right daughter, Norma Whitr, I have attached her to my family tree. Now searching for her marriage.

Elsiemary

Elsiemary Report 19 Feb 2013 22:25

I have now found her marriage (married surname Hannah) assuming this is correct. I think I am getting the hang of this now! Next step is to see if she has any children. :-)

I think the surname is Hanna, which is often Irish, so if you cannot find them, they might have gone to Ireland.

Yes, my typing error, it is Hanna. I found a marriage in 1958 to Saundercock, Falmouth.

I got that information from a google search on Peter Saundercock's name.
So you know that Norma is alive.
And try bt online for phone number and address.

Whether you decide to find her address on bt online or write c/o the funeral directors, you might want to wait for a few weeks. Her husband only died last month. :-0

I did write to Norma c/o the funeral directors who did the funeral of Norma's late husband. I received a wonderful reply from her daughter who was delighted when she read my letter. Sadly, her mother Norma has alzheimers. Her daughter was Aware of her grandfathers name (my Uncle George) however, she knew nothing more about him. I can now send her photos so that she can put a face to the name.
She is as delighted as me to discover our relationship. :-)
