Might sound a bit mad, but have you considered looking into the possibility of a newspaper or radio plea? Obviously you don't know where they ended up, but you could at going for the capitals of each territory, as there are only 7.
It's quite an unusual name, so if anyone knows of a Cherrill Carney it will be the same one I would say!
It is interesting, as you say, that as a widow with 3 daughters Lucy headed off to Australia. Is there any chance there were other family members over there?

Assuming they stayed in NSW, you can only search marriages up to 1962.
Australia has much stricter privacy laws than the UK

The marriage is for John Lawrence, not Lawrence John:
Marriages Sep 1939
Carney John L Jones Liverpool N. 8b 1459
Jones Lucy Carney Liverpool N. 8b 1459

Do you know if either of these births are him, or is his birth as Lawrence J?
Births Mar 1916
Carney John L Ryder W.Derby 8b 627
Births Mar 1917
Carney John L Wood W.Derby 8b 935

Hello Kath,

Yes, this is them. I found this info but am unable to trace Jacqueline`s father Lawrence John, going to Australia either before or after their sailing. I looked for a death for him in the Liverpool area but have not been lucky.

If he died prior to 1955, it seems odd that the mother Lucy, would have upped and taken the three childrfen half way across the world, when there was quite a big family still in Liverpool.

I have found Lucy Carney in the 1958 Australian Electoral Register living in the Norman Park area of Sydney, and a Cherrill Carney in the 1972 Elect. Reg.

I looked for a marriage for each of the girls, but have not been lucky so far.

I am looking for Jacqueline Carney, born in Liverpool in 1943, I think she went to Australia in 1955. She was the daughter of Lawrence John Carney and Lucy Jones. She had two sisters, Barbara and Cherrill.

Fingers crossed!!!
