The younger child Violet Olive Howard was also shipped off to Canada with Barnados -

Violet Olive Howard
Gender: Female
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1909
Birth Place: London, England
Age: 13
Date of Arrival: 19 May 1922
Port of Arrival: Quebec
Port of Departure: Southampton, England
Ship Name: Melita

Names her mother as Gertrude Howard, address unknown. But it makes it look very likely that this is the right John Thomas.

In what year did your grandparents marry?

Where did the information about his birth year of 1896 come from?
Did he want to appear older than his wife?

I'm assuming that's your tree on Ancestry, showing his death in 1980 and he had been married to Kathleen Francis Ireson - although it gives no date for the marriage.

According to the tree Kathleen was born in 1900 in London.

Katheleen Francis Ireson
Birth Place: London, England
Age: 19
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1900
Father Name: George Issac Ireson
Mother Name: Mary Blumfield Ireson
Spouse Name: John Thomas Elliott
Spouse's Age: 21
Spouse Birth Year: abt 1898
Spouse Birth Place: Baggiltin Flint
Spouse Father Name: Was Barnards's Home Boy, Does Not Know Or Cannot Get Father Or Mother's Name Elliott
Spouse Mother Name: Elliott
Marriage Date: 1 Oct 1919
Marriage County or District: Peterborough

Added: If this is the right marriage I would be very tempted to order that 1902 birth certificate - he has given age as 21 (ie born 1898, not 1896) but possibly had to lie in order to get married. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but in England you had to have parential consent to marry under 21, and in his case this would be impossible to get. Did the same apply in Canada - I'm not sure?

Must be worth the £9.25 to get the cert from GRO - even iff to find his parents and eliminate him.

Well done AnotherCanuck,

This is the way to go and the site does it in English as well as French. You should call yourself Mapleleaf - I like it - eh!

Going into that information now to have a look.
