You started this thread saying your mum and her sister wanted some answers. I assume to try to understand why they were adopted, was it a legal adoption? If so, has your mother applied for her adoption records?

If she hasn't already got it, she can apply for free the application form is available on this link - application for birth records:

https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-register

What the files hold can vary, but there is usually some background information as to why the child was adopted etc. They arrange to retrieve the file and your mother would need to attend an interview (formality, nothing to worry about) which would be arranged near to where she now lives.

Possible death for Susan/Susannah as there were no more children born to that couple after this:

Deaths Mar 1930
Callaghan Susan 28 Halifax 9a 584

Susan is also your aunt's name.

Well there is a marriage for a Charles A Callaghan in Halifax in 1955.

Look on FreeBMD.

I can see a birth of a son too.

There is a death for a Charles Alexander Callaghan in Halifax that could tie in to this birth:

Births Dec 1926
Callaghan Charles Hunt Halifax 9a 579

Your best bet is to order his marriage cert. to get his age and occupation:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

He didn't use his middle name when he married.

Mary married under Hegarty AND Mackie:

Marriages Dec 1948
Hegarty Mary Walker Halifax 2b 1181
Mackie Mary Walker Halifax 2b 1181
Walker Frank Hegarty Halifax 2b 1181
Walker Frank Mackie Halifax 2b 1181

Perhaps she was adopted by the Hegarty family?

Looks like she was. Lydia's sister married a Hegarty:

Mary and Joan's mother looks to be Lydia Goscombe. Mary was also registered under the name Mackie. Lydia married John H Mackie the same quarter Mary was born:

Marriages Jun 1929
Goscombe Lydia Mackie Halifax 9a 1001
Mackie John H Goscombe Halifax 9a 1001

She died the following year so this might explain why Joan and Mary were adopted.

Deaths Sep 1930
Mackie Lydia 26 Halifax 9a 441
