Colin Report 16 Apr 2013 11:45

I am trying to find any living relatives of my grandmother's youngest brother. He was William Rae who was born in1874 in Aberdeen, Scotland but spent some of his life working as a rice merchant in India and living in the south of England. He married Lillie Rettie in Aberdeen in 1905 and together they had one child Lillian Kathleen Rettie Rae who was born in Rangoon, India, the following year. The couple divorced in 1926 and I think that their daughter married a Frederick Freemantle in St Albans in 1928. I do not know if they had any children or what happened to her and her father after that..
Can anyone please help me?

Hi Shirley
Thanks most sincerely for the large amount of information you have managed to find.
Frederick and Lillian were obviously a well-travelled couple.
From the new information you have obtained, I think we can glean that;:-
1) Frederick Freemantle was born in 1897
2) He was an electrical engineer by profession
3) He and Lillian had a daughter named Margaret who was born c1925 probably before the couple got married. Her place of birth is as yet unknown.
4) Lillian appears to have died sometime between 1938 and 1954 in a place as yet unknown
5) Frederick appears to have emigrated to South Africa in 1954 after he had retired.
Can you add anything to this?
Regards
Colin

No Colin that about what I have concluded .
It looks that Lillian died abroad pre 1946 because Fred &Margaret came home without her

Wonder if Margaret married and stayed in the U K

Colin Report 16 Apr 2013 20:09

Shirley
I suppose they could have split up or travelled separately. However I do note that on his 1954 sailing to South Africa, Frederick's marital status is left blank.
So far I haven't found many records of a Margaret Freemantle in any of the usual sources.

Well done, Shirley. I should have known that her surname was probably Rae after I said above that she was born before the couple got married. I wonder if Frederick was the father and what the P stands for.

Shirley
It has taken me a bit of time to digest all the information you have found.
I note that you said that Lillie Cain was a WW2 casualty. Where did you get this info from? Or did you just mean that she died during the war?

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 17 Apr 2013 06:41

She died in WW2 and is listed on the CWGC site as a civilian casuality.

Would guess as the result of her home being bombed.as she died at home. You would need her cert for the details

St. George's Chapel in Westminster Abbey
Of the many civilians of the Commonwealth whose deaths were due to enemy action in the 1939-1945 War, the names of some 67,092 are commemorated in the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour, located near St. George's Chapel in Westminster Abbey, London.

Hi Shirley,
Since my last post I have found some interesting new information.
Lillian did not die in Palestine as you suspected. She obviously divorced Frederick and married an Edwin A Tippell in Wandsworth in Mar 1954 under her maiden name. She subsequently died in Surrey North in Feb 1985
However I have not discovered any new info about her daughter Margaret so the search goes on.
Kindest regards
Colin

So as she remarried Fred then went to Southa Africa.

Wonder if Margaret was a witness on her marriage,or on her death cert

Colin

Colin Report 19 Apr 2013 15:10

Hi Shirley
I must correct Item 3) in an earlier post.
I do not think now that Frederick Freemantle was Margaret's father.
Margaret was born in St Albans in 1925 at least 3 years before Frederick and Lillian got married.
