Found gold ring inscribed George Henry Unwin 1806 The ring was found at Sutton Lawn pleasure ground Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire during alterations to the ground.
Would anyone know of a family with George Henry Unwin in it so that that the ring may be returned to the family

George Unwin seems a fairly common name for that area, e.g.;
Deaths Dec 1839
Unwin George Mansfield 15 359
Deaths Mar 1842
Unwin George Mansfield 15 398
Deaths Dec 1844
UNWIN George Mansfield 15 363

Really difficult to look into, but is it a marriage band for an adult or a child's ring for a christening?

Possibly they were Travellers - based solely on the fairground location of the find - but have you had the gold checked out for carat/origin?

Perhaps more likely to be a memorial/mourning ring, so 1806 would be death?

Some trees on Ancestry have a George Henry Unwin born 1793:

George Henry Unwin
Birth 1793 in Sutton in Ashfield

but no death date, or source for birth.

Parents are given as Samuel Unwin and Elizabeth Ann Heathcote. Several other children born to the couple.

Hi James,

Kucinta may have the lead here - I would contact the owners of those trees just to see what information they have on George. It just seems such a positive inscription - given the full name and a date.

Good luck.
