Hi everyone,

Hope someone may be able to help me. I am searching for details of a Jean Morton (maiden name) who was born c1934 (possibly in South Shields County Durham).

Jean would be the daughter of William Morton (who was my maternal grandmother's only brother). William was born in 1902 in South Shields (Son of Thomas Morton and Mabel Trousdale).

I believe Jean's mother / William's wife, to be called Maud. I am NOT positive of her surname. I have photos of William and Maud's wedding and also photos of Jean as a baby. I also have a few photos of Maud (on the back of which is written "William's wife Maud" and another photo of Maud that also shows what I believe to be her surname - it looks like Maud, and then a word that looks something like Battier, Batties, Ballier, Ballies, Baillies, etc. etc. etc.

I can't make the spelling out properly and have searched every combination of the spelling that I can think of - but with no joy whatsoever. I thought I would be able to find her surname by finding Jean's birth reference, but I can't find a Jean Morton born c1934 with a Mother's Maiden Name that looks anything like what is written on the photo.

It has been suggested to me that Maud MAY have possibly been married previously, and I am currently checking this out (as best I can), but thought I'd post my question to see if ANYONE out there can help me.

The only other info I have, is that it has been suggested to me by a couple of family members, that William and his family POSSIBLY went to live in Wales, but I don't know if this is CONCRETE info.

I thank you in advance for any help anyone can give me. This has been a real BRICK WALL for the seven years I have been doing my research.

Best regards
Karen

Hi Shirley

Thanks for your messages. Yes I've looked everywhere.

I'm just checking out now about Maud being married before - but haven't found anything yet.

I have no knowledge of any other siblings.

Thanks so much for that Jan. That definitely gives me another name to look at for a marriage for William.

I have only searched for Maud. I will now do some searching for Ethel. I know they didn't always use their first names. My dad is a prime example of that. William Frederick (always called Fred), and his sister is Ethel Joyce (always called Joyce).

I'll check it out.

Thanks again.

Thanks but this is the wrong way round.

William Morton is the person she definitely married. William was my grandmother's brother.

If Maud (or Ethel Maud) had previously been married, then it may be that her surname was something like the Battie names that I previously mentioned.

As I can't find that name fitting as a mother's maiden name for Jean, I am suspecting that Maud (or Ethel Maud) SOMEONE, maybe married some called Battie or such like.

That's what I'm looking for now.

Many thanks anyway.

If Jean were an only child, it's possible she was adopted.

Have you looked for his death cert? Jean or Maud could be the informant.

I see he was born before the marriage but I don't see a marriage for him under Trousdale.

You say elsewhere Jean was 4 months in Sept. 1934.

The only birth that fits is this:

Births Jun 1934 (>99%)
Morton Jean Dyson Halifax 9a 471

However, there are other Morton/Dyson births in the Halifax area.
