I am looking for the son of Levi and Ella Bates called Gil Bates. I think Gil was born c. 1953 so will be about 60 years old now. I do not know where Gil was born or where he lives, all I know is he married to Eileen and their children are called Rachel & Paul. I only know this because I found my fathers funeral notice in the Manchester Evening News when he died in Manchester Royal Hospital on the 28.12.72.
Jim Bates.

All those different surnames imply that Ella was married before, but she was probably living with Levi for a while as she was also known as Bates.

Are you sure Gil was a Bates? Could his name be Gilbert? What exactly did the funeral notice say?

Who registered Levi's death?

Ditto Ella's?

Was Levi your father? If he was, your step-brother's surname could not have been Bates

There are no Gordon/Oldfield births after 1933

Reggie,

Jim appears to be the son of Levi and Eva.

Can you explain how Gill would be a stepbrother?

COuld he had 2 children in 1972 if only born in the 1950's?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 9 Jul 2013 08:04

Thanks, Rose

So that means he is/was a half-brother.........not step.......if Levi was 'Gil's' father.

Presumably, Jim lived with his mother............................which would explain part of the original post

For Gil to be his step-brother, he would have had to be Ella's child only...............and there are no births to support that idea (as per my earlier post)

But.....................

..........until - and unless - Jim returns with clarification, we're stuck.

Levi is in two trees on here other than Jim's

ErikaH Report 9 Jul 2013 08:25

Between 1968 and 1972, there were 15 marriages for surname Bates to forename Eileen.......................

.........none was for a man with a forename even remotely close to 'Gil'

Of course, he didn't have to have been married to 'Eileen' to have fathered children with her

Hi,
Re:- Gil Bates, perhaps I said it wrong when I called him my stepbrother and not my half brother. My mother Eva married Levi 12.12.1933 and parted just before I was born. Mum brought me up on her own and they got a divorce in 1950 so he could remarry. Levi was born 20.3.1907 and died 28. 12.1972 at Manchester Royal Hospital the death was reported by Ella Bates. Just before then Levi was a club steward at Longsight Cricket Club Manchester.
Thank you to Jax for working out Gil was 19 and married in 72. Gil was listed in the funeral notice as Gil, as to if he was Christen Gilbert or not I do not know.

Jim,

Was Gil the only one mentioned or where there others? I ask because there are 7 Bates/Oldfield births in Manchester.

Its possible that Gill was born before they married as the marriage records shows Ella's names as Bates / Oldfield/ Gordon

Would seem Levi and Ella had lived together .

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 12 Jul 2013 09:22

Please tell us exactly how the death notice was worded

Jax's 'working out' was based on what you said about the man........born in 1953.......and, I would think, was more of an expression of surprise that he would be married with two children by the time he was 19

Presumably, you guessed his birth year from when your father re-married......................an assumption which may prove false, as Ella had been using his name prior to their marriage.

IF Levi was his father, he could have been born at any time from when your father left your mother

If, as is probable, this is Ella's birth, would she be likely to be giving birth in 1953?
