Alison Report 16 Jul 2013 22:59

Hi everyone,

Please can you help me, I'm new to all this. My name is Alison Marlow (born Eleanor Susan Cooper 06031970, Brighton) and last week after watching a certain programme I decided once and for all to find out more information about my birth mother Susan Margaret Cooper 25031949, Shoreham) so I became a member. Sadly I found a record of her death in 1978, 8 years after I was born.
Her fathers name was Michael Nelson Lynn Cooper born 1925, mother Eleanor Dorothy Cooper (maiden name Nicholson) born 1926. She left Michael in 1969 and moved to Hampstead London where she was manageress of a wig company. My mothers step-mothers name Madeline M Cooper is on her death certificate, they married a year later in 1979 in Hove. I believe Madeline married Henry G E Mason in 1992 in Haywards Heath.
I can't seem to find any more information about any of them.
I am desperate to find them to learn more about my birth mother before she died but don't know what to do next, and feel time is running out.
My father is named as Garth Dalmain, 03091941, a married naval officer, and I cannot find anyone under that name!
Any help appreciated , thank you.

Welcome to the boards, Alison.

You seem to be finding out quite a bit!

Have you got all the birth marriage and death certificates for all the people that you have mentioned, just to make sure everything fits together?

Do you think Garth could be American?

Just for ref:
Marriages Dec 1948
Cooper Michael N L Nicholson Hove 5h 587
Nicholson Eleanor D Cooper Hove 5h 587

Could he have added the Michael?
Nelson L Cooper
Mother's Maiden Surname: Lynn
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1925
Registration District: Steyning

patchem Report 16 Jul 2013 23:49

Could this be Henry?
Births Dec 1937
Mason Henry G E Mason Wednesbury

patchem Report 16 Jul 2013 23:58

There is a Madeline M Mason and a Harry G Mason on in Redruth. However I have not looked to see if there is another couple for this name.

Alison Report 17 Jul 2013 00:11

Wow, thanks that was quick!
I have the marriage certificate of Michael Nelson Lynn Cooper, and Eleanor Dorothy Nicholson and Death certificate of my mother Susan Margaret Cooper. I guess the next step is to get the marriage certificate of Michael and Madeline, and Madeline and Henry G Mason 1992, then I'll know a bit more. I'll have a look on, don't really know what that is - oh and look up where Reruth is!

Thanks again
Alison :-)

Thank you for your help patchem,

It was the right Madeline, I spoke to her this morning and she is lovely. She talked about my mother and other relatives and we promised to keep in touch.
She doesn't know if my paternal grandfather is still alive but I can't find a death record for him so he must be. She confirmed his name was Michael Nelson Lynn Cooper.
So I'll carry on the search for him.
I feel so happy to have spoken to someone who knew my mother, thanks again for your help.

Alison :-D

Penny Report 18 Jul 2013 16:04

He could have died abroad, don't forget, May also have registered the death as plain michael Cooper

patchem Report 18 Jul 2013 18:21

Pleased you are making more progress, with good results.

Have you got the birth date for Michael Nelson Lynn Cooper, to help in looking for deaths under different combinations of names?

Well done Shirley.
That must be him. I don't have his full birth date, but on his marriage certificate in 1948 it says that he is 23, so that would tie in. I must be doing something wrong in the searches, as I put the right name in and looked for a death record up to 2013- I didn't know that the death records on line don't go passed 2005.
I think I'll try to get a copy of his death certificate, Madeline told me that he had a younger brother (can't remember his name because I was in a bit of a fluster, but I'm writing to her now so I'll ask).
Thank you for all your help.
Thanks to Penny too.
Alison :-)

would be be considerably younger if this is him

Name: Anthony P Cooper
Mother's Maiden Surname: Lynn
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1940
Registration District: Brighton
Inferred County: Sussex,
Volume Number: 2b
Page Number: 525

Alison Report 20 Jul 2013 10:56

That must be him, you know 'Tony' rings a bell. I'm sure that's the name she mentioned. Wow, so he was 15 years younger! They had a family garage in Hove I think called Coopers cars. Although, a few years ago I found a record of it in being in Brunswick street, Madeline said it was near Hove Station. I'll see if I can find out more info on Tony, it would be nice to meet him if he's still alive.

Thank you,

Alison. :-)

Search for Anthony P Cooper in Brighton. There is a free result partial post code BN1 which 'might' be him.

The phone book entry which could match with that is also listed

Alison Report 22 Jul 2013 18:32

Hi there,
Thank you.
Have now got a phone number and address in BN1 from BT phone book, will give him a call to see if its him tomorrow. Deep breath!

There is actually a Garth Dalmain who belongs to facebook.
Does not look very active, but worth considering?
