Find Living Relatives

Trying to find out what happened to Peter Irvine born 30 May 1964 at the Royal Canadian Hospital Taplow, Buckinghamshire. His birth was registered by declaration on 2 Jul 1964 in Windsor, Berkshire a few miles away, where his mother was living. The birth certificate states he was adopted. Peter would be my brother-in-law and I am conducting this search to help my sister-in-law who is desperate to find him or what happened to him. She was born almost a year later. I personally know a great deal about the whole family, being older and the situation Peter's mother was in at the time of his birth, along with some personal conversations relating to the matter (but nothing about Peter other than his birth and disappearance). We have put my sister's name on the adoption register hoping for contact, but nothing a year later. I have contacted NORCAP and Dr Barnardos (the latter being a very strong possibility); and local adoption advisory for Eton and Windsor who could not help. I have searched the baptism registers for The Royal Canadian, but already knew Peter's mother had none of her other four children baptised. In the beginning I had a very long conversation with the Registrar who issued me a copy of Peter's Birth Certificate, and heartily encouraged me to look for him, but gave no advice on how.
I really want to help my sister-in-law, but my hands are tied as I am not a blood relative (just connected by marriage) and we live quite a distance apart; both of us have responsibilities taking up much of our time which makes searching together quite difficult. Any advice or help would be much appreciated to help with a further search for Peter. Earlier today I was reading several message boards here on GR regarding adoption and noted a mention that studying birth indices for ammended entries might help to find an adopted person's new name and as a seasoned family history addict (although sadly no expert on adoptions) have done this, but can anyone clarify whether looking in the district where the mother had the baby is enough or would I have to consider he might be registered under his new name anywhere? Can anyone explain this idea in more detail to me please?

Yes me too. I feel it cannot be that easy when adoption records are so closely guarded. I also understood that adoption often did not take place in the same district and could be anywhere. My mother-in-law once talked at length to me about Barnardo's, without actually admitting to Peter and I do think they could probably help, but I need to convince my sister who has less understanding of what can be done; I cannot do that for her. adoptions are not on the birth registers - you only get one shot at the birth indexes- you have it- its in the birth name!

The name he was given after adoption will be in the adoption register....but you cannot cross ref the two.

Yes she put her name on the adoption contact register about 18 months ago. Thank you for clarifying the bit about the birth and adoption registers, which makes far more sense Penny

Only approved intermediary services have access to the adoption register information - which they can use to try to search adopted relatives

Good luck to you both, though even if they find him they are not at liberty to disclose the info unless he wants contact. And it is likely to cost - Norcap used to be one of the better agencies, but they closed down.

Yes I heard last night NORCAP closed down. I had several conversations with them way back, but we were not in a position to use their services at the time and I understand he may not want contact anyway. I am just the go-between of course and not the one to go looking. Thank you again for responding
