As she had a birth cert and a death cert, Greta was definitely not stillborn

I agree that he could have lied, that's what we think he may have done......the family in Monmouth, where the fathers name was Alexander, did have a son John(no mention of Lachlan though) and he was born the same year as my grandfather...and strangely, with our own research, and that of Janet in Australia, John, son of Alexander, also sort of disappeared. Alexanders wife and the children, moved to Cardiff, to a street just a short distance from my grandmother. Re the boxing, we've done a lot of research on that, also checked some newspapers, but have not been able to find anything, which is strange, as according to Naval records, he had been a professional boxer..........

He could have easily lied about his father's name, unfortunately.

Do you know if he did a lot of boxing - reports in local newspaper archives as a very long shot for a little background colour?

sorry...re above post....Cliff was Irenes nephew (the son of her sister, Olive)....

I had also hoped, faintly, that there may be some living descendants of Richard and Rosina Harris (my great grandparents) that may have some handed down information about my grandfather...I believe all Irene's siblings are dead now...the last one I was in contact with, this year, after many years searching, was her brother Cliff, he was the one who remembered my grandfather boxing in Cardiff, but he remembered nothing else about him, and I had asked him to really try and remember.......sadly, Cliff died this year, he was 87..

Hi Patchem......firstly I wish to say a big thankyou, to you and Reggie for all your help. The lady from Australia, on Roots chat, felt that we were connected to the same family she was researching. After exchanging many emails with her, and my son, we started thinking we had been on the wrong trail, and that my grandfather was from the same family as hers. However, even though it had all started looking very plausible, there was still some doubt, mainly because my grandfather had stated on the marriage certificate, that his fathers name was Hector, and they were from Lanarkshire., the father in the family in Monmouth was named Alexander. The other thing that we had been thinking, was, did my grandfather lie about his fathers name, and any other details, because he was going to join the Navy, and if the Navy had know he had been in Borstal, they maybe would not have let him join.
Also, my grandmother came home to her parents home in Wales, in 1918, because that was where my father was born..........such an enigma, and I would dearly love to discover the truth about my grandfather....ive been searching on and off, since 1984, having also contacted the M.O.D for details of my grandfather, and received that info, but no info of his parentage....My son has spent an immense amount of time on the Ancestry site this last 2 years too.

There is a lot more information here, from your discussions:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=616260.10

However, you were looking for relations of Richard, Rosina and Irene.

Have you put them in your tree, and looked for them in other trees on here?

Hi Patchem......it says he is a property owner...that's all........thanks

patchem Report 1 Jan 2014 19:29

Have you got an occupation for Hector from the marriage certificate?

Thanks

Mary

Mary Report 1 Jan 2014 19:26

He named his father as Hector....ive looked up that too. My grandmother lived in Cardiff, and the family knew my grandfather was there also, because my second cousin remembered him boxing in Cardiff, though they could not remember anything else..I did find a Hector and wife, living in Monmouth, but there were no sons by the name of Lachlan John. Why he went to Kent, and my grandmother, is a mystery. We know he was in Borstal for being in trouble. I went to the Glamorgan archives, to see if we could get more info, the gentleman there, told me, that if my grandfather had been in trouble in Cardiff, he would have been sent to a local Borstal, not to Kent.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 1 Jan 2014 15:49

Did he name his father when he married?

Why do you think he met his wife in Cardiff?

.......................they married in KENT

It is helpful if you tell us all you know about people you are asking about before we start looking..................

Another point.............birthplaces are NOT recorded on England/Wales marriage certs

Mary

Mary Report 1 Jan 2014 12:52

hi.....ive got my grandparents marriage certificate.....my son is on Ancestry, and he found the details of my grandfather in Borstal...we just hope to find more details of his parentage, and where he lived in Cardiff, as a relative remembered him being a boxer there, and on his service record, it states he was a boxer before entering the Navy. Wehave tried various boxing associations...no luck there either. The reason we are unable to find more info on him, after the marriage, is because he "jumped ship" in 1918, when my father was 4 months old, and he was never heard of after that.

Mary Report 1 Jan 2014 10:45

Hi....we have all that information Reggie, thankyou. What we are trying to establish, is, where in Cardiff he was living when he met my grandmother, Irene. A lady from Australia contacted us, about a John McKAY , but this one was born in Monmouthshire, and according to my grandparents marriage certificate, John was born in Sc.otland...so there is the mystery....we cannot find a birth for him in Scotland, that ties in with the info we have........
