Thank you for this Grainne. No, I'm sure this isn't the brother. The brother would have been born in 1952 at the earliest.

I've been checking through the Family Search website which Patchem suggests above, but I can't find any details of William and Elsie emigrating to New Zealand in the 1960s.

A puzzle.
Cheers, Joyce

?
Births Sep 1914
Ramsay William D Coock Leicester 7a 485

?
Births Dec 1923
Frost Elsie L Haxton Wandsworth 1d 850

D W Ramsay would fit with the birth that Grainne posted (with initials reversed)

B F and D L unrelated family?

Just for info, if above birth correct, this looks like marriage of William's parents,(as I was trying to find links to the other Ramsays on board)

Marriages Sep 1913
Cook Emily E Ramsay Leicester 7a 609
Ramsay William D Cook Leicester 7a 609

Thank you for this Patchem.
It looks like William (b 1914) and Elsie (b1923) might be our couple (Jean's parents) - but I can't see a birth with a mother's maiden name Frost for DW Ramsey (b1948). I've searched and can only find David Ramsey, b1951, Spen Valley.

Could there be such a mistake in the ages?

1951 is more likely to be the brother's birth ydar, although I still think it should be nearer 1953.

Cheers, Joyce

Another puzzle is, of course, the emigration listing doesn't show Jean Ramsey as going with the family. I suppose it's possible she could have stayed behind.

Curiouser and curiouser!

Have you looked at the marriages for Jean C? One possibility is living in Chorley.

HI Rose - yes, I've looked at marriages for Jean bu only a couple seemed to fit - to SHEEMAN and HOWARD. I've spoken to Jean Howard on the phone - it's not her. And Jean Sheeman doesn't appear in Chorley in the Electoral Roll. So I'm wondering which marriage you might have identified as a possible.

Many thanks for your interest, Joyce

It's the Sheehan one. Look for a possible remarriage.

Got it! Well, at least I've found the possible remarriage and I have an address, but no phone number. Will work around this one.

Will let everyone know the outcome.

I've just heard from the Jean in Chorley - and this is not the right Jean Ramsey.

Now I'm stumped!

I've written to the Wimbledon News and am now in the process of writing to about 10 New Zealand newspapers in the hope that someone will remember going to school with David Ramsey who, according to the records above, was about 14 when he arrived in Wellington.

Any other suggestions will be most gratefully received.

Many thanks, Joyce

Update: the Wimbledon News published my letter 2 weeks ago. Nobody contacted me to say they knew Jean Ramsey, but I did get an email from somebody who remembered me!

Hopefully the New Zealand press will be publishing my requests as I write. Let's see what the next few weeks bring.

Cisco Report 5 Nov 2014 16:37

Hello Everyone – it’s been a few months during which time I’ve put ads in New Zealand newspapers, as well as the South London UK ones which cover Wimbledon. But I’ve had absolutely no response. It’s as though Jean Ramsey has disappeared off the earth!

To recap: the facts which I can positively say are true:
Jean Ramsey was born during the last quarter of 1944.
Her parents were William and Elsie RAMSEY (they are on the electoral rolls for 1961 at 19 Springfield Road, Wimbledon – and I’ve received confirmation from a neighbour that Jean’s mother’s name was Elsie). This neighbour also confirmed that Jean’s brother’s name was David.
I know the name Ramsey is spelt this was as Jean signed the rear of a school photograph herself using this spelling.
When Jean left school in December 1959, she worked as an apprentice hairdresser in Leopold Road, Wimbledon.
I checked out the Jean Ramseys born during the last quarter of 1944 and 3 emerged with mothers with the following maiden names: Aitchison, Musgrove and Frost. I dismissed Aitchison as there were no marriages to Ramsey. I dismissed Musgrove as there were no other siblings and this was the 3rd quarter of 1944. Frost is the one which came up trumps as there is a brother, David, born 1951. (There also appears to be a sister, Linda, born 1948 which the Wimbledon neighbour and I didn’t know about).

Information which you all found which I believe is relevant
‘patchem’ found a marriage for Elsie L Frost to William D Ramsey in Battersea (1d 468), in Dec 1943.
‘patchem’ also found immigration record to New Zealand in 1962 showing WD Ramsey, age 49 Motor Mechanic; EL Ramsey, age 38, Housewife; DW Ramsey, age 14. I believe this is the family, but that Jean did not go with them.

My search for Jean Ramsey’s possible marriage
‘Rose’ identified a possible marriage to an Arthur Sheehan. Having found a possible Sheehan in Cornwall, I checked out 7 Sheehans in Devon and Cornwall (obtained from GR Electoral Rolls) – nothing emerged.
Rose also identified a possible marriage in Chorley – I checked this out – but not the right Jean.
The marriage in 1969 to Michael Howard showed this is not the right Jean.

PLEASE – does anyone have any further suggestions?
Many thanks for your help and interest,
Joyce

Have you checked to see if Jean later emmigrated in her married name?

.....or checked for any possible children born of that marriage? This would perhaps help to narrow the search area.

I havent yet ascertained whether Jean ever married. Using GR, I haven't been able to find any details of her emigrating under her RAmsey name.

Rose - thank you so much for this lead. It took me a while last evening, but I've found Dorothy. I spoke to the receptionist at the retirement village who suggested I ring back later afternoon NZ time. Will get up early tomorrow to do this. Will let you all know the outcome - hopefully this will lead me to Jean Ramsey. cheers, Joyce
