I am looking for anyone who can help with information on the above couple, in the hope of finding any living relatives from their children, Peter, James, Norman or Marion.

Mary was born in Kilnnian and Kilmore, Isle of Mull around 1846 -48, she had one sister named Ann. As far as I know they moved with their Mother to Glasgow when very young, when she remarried a Hugh Campbell on Kilnnian and Kilmore, Isle of Mull.

I am Mary's great grand daughter through her son Peter.

Peter Smith's father was a James Smith and his Mother a Helen Clark. I can find no details on Helen Clark or James Smith, born around 1818- 1820.

I know that the family had a long association with Glasgow Cathedral, and that my Great Grandfather Peter, was a School Janitor somewhere in the Glasgow City area.

Mary's Mother was Marion McArthur and she had two marriages. Mary does have brothers from her Mothers second marriage. I would be keen to find any living relatives from this connection as well.

Hoping that someone can help. :-)

for info of others searching, dates of birth of children are important

1891 Scotland census in Glasgow St James

Peter Smith 40 (c1851) school janitor
Mary McCallum Smith 42 (c1849)
James Smith 15 (c1876)
Peter Smith 12 (c1879)
Marion Smith 5 (c1886)
Norman C Smith 2 (c1889)

so the death in British Columbia does match the age of Norman in the household ... Isabella do you have your Norman's exact dob from a birth record?

what you really need is to access 1911 census records at scotlandspeople to try to find the children married and possibly with children

there is only one marriage of a Norman Smith to a Christina MacLeod in Scotland after 1905: in 1959 (need credits to see details)

and no marriage in British Columbia (records go up to 1936)

http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-3DD82D0/gbsearch/Births,Marriages,Deaths

this is the death of Christina MacLeod Smith in BC

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FLRK-X2B

Name: Christina Hughina Smith
Event Type: Death
Event Date: 16 Nov 1956
Event Place: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Gender: Female
Age: 64
Marital Status: Married
Birth Date: 13 Oct 1892
Birthplace: , Scotland
Father's Name: John Macleod
Mother's Name: Morrison
Spouse's Name: Norman Smith
Affiliate Film Number: B13230

but without her mother's given name it is difficult to spot her in the 1901 census ... the only one with father John is in Stornaway where the name is concentrated

the record for the Norman Smith death is here

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FLYX-ZTL

and you can view the image from that record

he had been in Canada for 58 years in 1969 and in Vancouver for 32 years

he was a civil engineer ... unfortunately, no family member is named on the certificate

Thank you very much, it was a great surprise thismorning to open up my computer and find more suggestions. I really appreciate this, as I am a bit at sea with my research.

My Father and Mother came to New Zealand when I was a baby, and as my Father died when I was quite young, I can't remember anything very much that was said about his Smith Family. I knew his grandfather had been a school janitor but as for any family members nothing was said. I did know that his Grandmother Mary was from the Isle of Mull.

I will take a look into Norman Smith a bit more closely now.

I seem to remember something about a Policeman being in the Smith family, but that could be wrong.

I will look for a birth record of Norman around 1889 on Scotlands People.

Thank you Yvonne and Joonie Cloonie.

Thank you, rootgather.

Does anyone know how I could find out about Schools in the Glasgow Area in 1901?

I would like to trace the school my great grandfather was janitor of, presumably in the Rottenrow Area.

Update on my previous post from last year.

I have found out that Norman Clark Smith, my Great Uncle Died at age 18, so he is not the Norman that went overseas.

I can't find a death record for James Smith or Marion Smith. They are both a mystery as I have searched many different sites.

Marion Smith stayed with my Great Grandfather until his death in 1913 at 12 Rottenrow, then I can't find any further record of her. Perhaps she married, but I can't find any record of this either.

There is no mention of James, who I presume was married, as he is not mentioned in the 1911 census, or perhaps he went overseas.

I seem to have hit some brick walls for the meantime.
