GORDON Family of Yorkshire

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Prussian Report 10 Jan 2016 15:18

Looking to trace the living descendants of Tom GORDON who was born in Pocklington, East Riding, Yorks and who later lived in Goole. Living family member Gordon S. is thought to be residing in Rotherham, S. Yorks.

My GORDON family are thought to have originally come from Fife, Scotland.
Earliest known maternal ancestor is William GORDON born in Northumberland, England circa 1801 who settled in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Known places of residence include Market Weighton and Pocklington. The GORDON family were shepherds.

I have longstanding contact with 2 female cousins who live in Oxfordshire.

try looking in members trees, which is under the Search heading, to see if anyone has family in their tree.

Other than that you would need to come forward a bit to give some names you are interested in so we can try to help

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Jan 2016 23:13

for info this seems to be Tom and second wife on the 1939 register

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/1939register

Gordon Household Bishop Auckland U.D., Durham, England
Tom Gordon 1869
Florence C Gordon 1876

no one else in household

the marriage was Florence's first

Births Sep 1876
Revell Florence Christiana York 9d 29

and there were no children with mother Revell born after 1911 census

so Alice is the only child and she had no middle name so might not be easy to trace

Births Jun 1904
Gordon Alice York 9d 37

if the living relation's surname is 'S' this may mean you know the name of Alice's husband ... would have been best to say, if you already knew Tom only had one child and you know whom that child married ...

in that case, the marriage seems to have been 1932 and the birth 1940, and again only the one birth to the marriage?

and yes, there is a matching electoral roll entry that you can find here

http://www.freeelectoralroll.co.uk/

... however, he appears to be listed there (checked against 192.com) only to 2010 so unfortunately may have died beyond the reach of the on-line deaths index (2007)

yes :-(

http://tinyurl.com/hoo268k

his wife is still on the 2015 electoral roll

the family who lit a candle on the obituary page appear to be in-laws and they can be found by searching for the surname in Doncaster

http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/search/residential/search.publisha?

it isn't clear whether you descend from an ancestor of Tom and are trying to verify his connection, or whether the cousins in Oxfordshire are connected with him ..........

or maybe I'm the only one not quite getting this :-)

Many thanks you for all this information.

I was cautious about revealing full names of possible living relatives. However, one such name is Gordon SUDDOCK of Rotherham who was the son of Alice (Tom's daughter) SCRUTON/SCRUTTON nee GORDON .

My 2 living female cousins in Oxfordshire are descended from Tom GORDON's older brother John GORDON - my maternal great grandfather.

I'll update my tree and then start doing some searches.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 11 Jan 2016 17:40

understood Prussian, and so I also didn't post the name :-)

(I should have been clearer - I didn't mean to say what Alice's married surname was, just that you knew what it was)

as you see, Gordon S. is now deceased but since his wife is living, I just gave the links for finding her

it seems he did not have children, unfortunately

I now learn that Tom and Florence GORDON also had a son named Francis Thomas who married (details not known) and had no children.

Autumnleaves Report 12 Jan 2016 18:51

On the 1911 census listed by Shirley it showed a
Francis Thomas Gordon as well as Alice.

Free BMD gave the birth as Dec. 1902 in York. Trying to find it again plus marriages I get nothing. So looked on Genes and found various possibilities.

Do try Genes it may prove helpful.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 12 Jan 2016 21:44

Births Dec 1902
GORDON Francis Thomas York 9d 8

your search foo temporarily deserted you autumnleaves :-D

there are two marriages in 1940 and one in 1948 for a Francis T

the ones in Swansea and St Albans seem to be accounted for by births in those places

which leaves Durham W in 1948, for which there is no other birth of a FTG to fit

two births in Durham N 1950-1956

Name: Francis Thomas Gordon

Yes Joonie Freebmd was driving me mad - gave me the 1902 birth then later no birth marriage or death grrh.

As the 1911 census as shown by Shirley, listed the family in Durham area, I thought the 1948 marriage may be a good possible- although perhaps a bit late for a first marriage.

On Genes I clicked on all the other various things listed on the left of the screen - there was something about a Railway or platelayers certificate ??? - Will have another look tomorrow as too brain dead now and have no desire for BMD or anything else to wind me up again LOL.

Thanks once again for your continued research on my behalf.

I have taken the opportunity to make a much belated tribute to the passing of Gordon SUDDOCK per the newspaper link above.

I recognise a family connection with Durham as my grandmother Elizabeth GORDON (b. 1901) and mother Elsie May MARTIN nee CRISP (b. 1922) were born in the county.

I have sent a message to a potential match for my earliest known maternal ancestor William GORDON born Northumberland 1801.
