Have you tried "Search all members' trees"? (In drop-down menu when you hover over "Search" at the top right of this page.)

Enter his name and year of birth (or just his name), and click on "Search". Iif any of the results look like him, click on "Find out more" to contact the tree owners.
Don't ask to see their trees (yet) - just explain your interest and ask if they know of any descendants of Sam.

However, I don't see any McKinlay (or different spelling) / Donald births between 1932 and 1970 - in England/ Wales. (On FreeBMD)
Nor any other McKinlay / Donald births on Ancestry.

Are you sure Margaret's maiden name was Donald? Could she have had a previous marriage?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Feb 2016 15:14

Actually, they only married in 1959 - so any children would probably (though not necessarily) have been born after that.

Still don't see the birth of any son, though.

There's the birth of a McKinlay / Donald girl in Yorkshire in 1970 - but she can't be Sam's child, as the Aden conflict ended in 1967..

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Feb 2016 15:35

Can't see Sam's death during the Aden years, either - presumably it would have been registered in UK.

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 29 Feb 2016 15:38

If he was in the RAF could be an overseas birth.

Aden didn't finish until 1967, it started 1963/64. The son could have been born in the 60s anywhere in the world. They didn't bring back many bodies in those days so could be buried in Aden.

Families didnt travel with the troops went they went to conflicts

My hubby was in the RAF reserves when the Suez crisis was on and he received notification he may be called up '

Was told to ensure his family were provided for and to inform them if he was now married so they could update his record .

Thankfully he wasnt called upon :-D

PatinCyprus Report 29 Feb 2016 16:08

Are you sure there was a child as I've checked with FMP for overseas birth, my son's is there (service birth overseas) but no Mckinlay with mmn Donald.

This wasn't a 2nd marriage was it, he would have been 31/32 in 1959?

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 29 Feb 2016 16:12

In the early 1960s the RAF were all over the world, the family may have been in UK at the time of his death but his son could have been born on a previous overseas posting. He's in Aden at the end and could have been just detached in to pack up things, we don't know. If it was just a detachment his posting for instance could have been Malta or Cyprus.

Edit just found info, families were evacuated from Aden in 1967. Families were out here during EOKA troubles in the 1950s and again in 1974. At least 1 wife killed out here. A children's party was attacked in December 1964 in Aden. I child killed (an Air Commodore's daughter) 4 injured.

Rambling Report 29 Feb 2016 16:27

Samuel, there was a previous marriage, Edited* may or may not* be related to the birth you have on your tree ( your own birth I assume) so do you have any evidence that there was a child to the second marriage or is it a guess?

What is odd is that when I looked at trees for the name Samuel Mckinlay , I noticed that someone else ( a couple) has the same name in their tree, they also cropped up yesterday on a seperate search I had done yesterday for someone in the same area, I can't see a connection though.

If there was a son is he invisible because he was born prior to marriage or was the mother married before and her maiden name not Donald.

The marriage cert will give that answer with her father's name.

Looks like an uncle, perhaps, right age 20 years older than the Samuel born 1927, but would say that it's the same family. Samuel named after his grandfather maybe.
