I have just discovered that my great grandfather served with the East Surrey Regiment from 1914. His details confirmed his occupation was a 'carter'
Does anyone have any details on the East Surrey Regiment or occupation for me please.

Not sure what your after but a carter was a Driver of horse-drawn vehicles for transporting goods


The East Surrey Regiment was an Infantry regiment

Have you googled to see if there is any info online - most regiments are covered from WW1 in some shape or form

Researching:

There are the Surrey Recruitment Registers on FindMyPast - worth a search.

Also, his service records might be on the Ancestry website, although lots were destroyed in WW2, so they may not have survived.

You need to know which battalion he was in, to find out what he was involved in. If his service records have survived, they will give this information. If not, you'd need to look at Medal cards to try to identify his Regimental number,assuming he was entitled to Medals, and Medal Rolls, which will give his battalion. Medal cards are online but Medal Rolls are just available at the National Archives.

The East Surrey Regiment has an excellent website, giving their War Diary from mobilisation to France from their barracks in Dublin in August 1914 and it names many names, so you might just find what you are looking for. They were badly mauled at the first battle of Mons that August. (It was in this regiment' 1st Battalion that Capt Robert Campbell served before being captured and then, uniquely, in 1916 being allowed home to England on parole for two weeks to see his dieing mother.) Google them and follow the links
