Hi just wondering if someone can help
the above was born 1896 at marylebone to Mary he was born illegitamate and in 1897 Mary had returned home with Henry and married at Wirksworth Derbyshire to thos henry gould ,and Henry lived with them going through scholl has Henry Gould
he served in the ww1 with the notts and derby and later was attached to the Manchester pals regiment he was k.i.a.
where can i find his recrds i have looked under the various spellings of the name hickton but have had no luck ,no luck either with the names Gould
Also i cannot find hi s death notice of war casualtiy in newspapers

Ancestry hold the service records for WW1 Army personnel. If you've already searched on there, his may be among the 60% or so destroyed in WW2 bombing

Oh a very big Thank you,I have photos of his brothers who also fought too Mary and Thomas lost 2 children in that war
with regards to Henry this is definately him and your info a lot of it I have NOT got is very interesting

Casualty lists

Lists of British casualties were published, although it appears not wholly or consistently.

Original War Office lists of men who died, were wounded or declared missing are held on microfilm at the National Newspaper Library at Colindale in London. To search them it would be necessary to know an approximate date.

Several national newspapers reproduced the lists, notably the “Times”, “Irish Times” and “The Scotsman”. All of these have been digitised and can be searched online, with the “Irish Times” and “The Scotsman” offering “pay per view” downloads of pages. The “Times” digital archive can be accessed via many libraries.

Local newspapers regularly carried lists and articles on their men who had appeared in the lists.

The unit war diaries sometimes name casualties or include attached lists.

I know that on Henry`s birth cert the surname is spelled Hickton but on all later docs it isspelled Higton

Re the Hickton/Higton spelling

Say the words aloud, and you'll realise how errors can creep in.
My own maiden name deviates from one spelling to another when a branch moved counties. Even as late as the 1900's, many of the older generation were barely literate and couldn't identify errors when their surname was written down.

from all of this I will now be able to purchase his death cert
his mother Mary it seems got pregnant and was sent away to have Henry although locals remember storys of Thomas and Mary courting so it is probably safe to assume that Thomas was Henry`s father

my next mission is to try to see if Henry`s medals were ever presented to his parents

Athough Henry's war records don't seem to have survived, I'd imagine that as a Medal Card had been produced, they probably were sent to his parents. After all, Luthers were sent in 1922.

The family had obviously kept in touch with the Ministry
