How can I find my fathers records, I know he joined army around 1914 and lived in Old market area of Bristol.. Can anyone help please.

Potty Report 25 Oct 2013 15:03

Hi Valerie and welcome to the boards.

The only surviving records from WW1 can be viewed on the Ancestry site, as can medal cards. Only about 30% of the service/pensions records survived though.

Potty Report 25 Oct 2013 15:09

Not finding a service or pension record for him using all his names. Can you give his DOB in case he didn't use all his names.

There are quite a few medal cards for Frederick J but no way of knowing which could be his.

Looks a possibility so might help with birth date on records:

England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2007
Name: Frederick Joseph H Phillips
Birth Date: 28 Jul 1897
Date of Registration: Dec 1980
Age at Death: 83
Registration District: Bristol
Inferred County: Avon
Volume: 22
Page: 0785

Sorry, this is an aside and is unrelated to the search for military records but have just looked at the 1911 census and in the infirmity column it has for father Edwin "crippled", for mother Rose it says "blind". For the two children Frederick and Grace it says "perfect".

And indeed they must have been.

Thank you all,
Cynthia, MarieCeleste and "Potty" and all others who helped me.
I Have written everything down, yes indeed my fathers details are exactly as you gave me and my grandfather Edwin was indeed a cripple. I am with Ancestry so will look there. Thank you all again, think I am going to just love this message tool. Best wishes. Valerie
