D Day death.How long for news to reach relatives?

from info found by using "google" one soldiers death was notified to his parents by telegram on the 26th June 1944, although according to the record on the CWGC site he died 5 days after D Day.

So I would say notification would have been sent out in two to three weeks after he was killed, unless of course he could not be identified at the time

Would notices have been placed in a newspaper anyway? Not all families would have done so. Try googling his name as it might be on an official list somewhere.

Has your friend sent for his service records - depending on the detail, there may be some notification when family was informed. They are held by the MOD and, unless his widow applies, will cost the relative £30 + many months of waiting

Friend's grandfather died on D Day with the Green Howards. Buried in France. I am trying to find his death announcement in our local paper (Stoke-on-Trent). Have searched Jun-Dec1944. Any idea how long it would have taken for news of his death to have reached his family in Stoke?
