I would say because of the info documented on his Army service records that his bith cert is definatly one you will need but i am concerned that his Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services record say's Date of Birth: 05 January 1881

I cannot see a birth listed for that name in 1881+/- 1 year in Ulverston

The birth we found is for the first quarter 1883 so his "birth-day" could be correct

That date is 2 years out from the one listed on the GRO index and his age on other documents,

He may have simply lied about his age when he joined the Navy, I think if it was me i would order the cert using the GRO reference details but Add his fathers name (only) James Hodgson, That way if it's is the wrong cert they will not supply it and i'm not sure but i think you get a partial refund? I could be wrong (It's a while since i got it wrong)

Roy gave you the link to order certificates on-line
……………
You have to register first and they charge £9. 25 including P&P

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
…………

GRO stands for General Regiser Office and is located (I think) in Southport.

Local register offices send copies of all post 1837 bmd registrations to them, which are then assigned a district registration name, volume number and page number.
You need those details to make ordering and despatch easier and quicker.

A free site to find the details is http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

As I’m not too sure which certs you were thinking of ordering (once you’ve collected enough pennies from the back of the sofa) one picked out from the thread is analysed.

Births Dec 1912 (>99%)
-----------------------------------------------------
Hudson Violet A Hyde Orsett 4a 1223

Birth registered 1912
Quarter Oct-Nov-Dec
Surname Hudson
First names Violet A
Mother's maiden surname - Hyde
Reg District Orsett
Volume 4a
Page 1223

Once you’ve registered with the GRO site, on one of the early pages, towards the bottom it asks you if you know the reg number. At that point click ‘yes’. Then you use the details to complete the form. Only give exactly what is recorded on the index – nothing more, nothing less.

Was this the Thomas Hodgson birth cert you were thinking of ordering?

Births Mar 1883
HODGSON Thomas Ulverston 8e 812

Year- 1883
Quarter- Jan-Feb-Mar
Surname- Hodgson
First name- Thomas
Reg district- Ulverston
Volume- 8e

Porkie_Pie Report 26 Feb 2014 12:00

The details for the birth of Violet A Hudson are on thomas's service record,

She was born 8/11/1912 acording to his army service record

Is it Thomas hudson's birth cert your thinking of getting?

The details on the GRO index are

Births Mar 1883
HODGSON Thomas Ulverston 8e 812

So the birth was "registered" in the March quarter of 1883 in the name of "Thomas Hodgson" in Ulverston registration district volume 8e and the page number is 812

The birth cert "should" confirm if the James and Ann Hodgson listed on his service record are his parents, It should list his dads occupation and his mothers maiden name plus any other names she had been known by, such as any previous married names, It should also give you an address as to where he was born and who the informant was plus their address

The 1911 census states that Ann Hodgson had been married for 44 years, Their is a marriage in Ulverston 1868 for a James Hodgson to possibly a Ann Topman,

Once you get the birth certificate it should confirm this but it may (not)

One step at a time because as has been said certs are required as confirmation that you are following the correct family,

His entry on the Royal Navy Registers of Seamen gives concerns and an air of doubt as his dob on that record is out by 2 yeas but he may have lied,

His Navy entry says born 5th jan 1881 but Cris Ho posted on page 2

England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Thomas Hodgson
Gender:Male
>>>>>>>Birth Date:5 Jan 1883 <<<<<<<<<<<<
Birth Place:Ulverston, Lancaster, England
Baptism Date:4 Feb 1883
Baptism Place:Ulverston, Lancashire, England
Father:James Hodgson
Mother: Ann Hodgson

As i said in my other post, I would on this occation order his birth cert using the GRO index details but because of the doubt it may be best to give his fathers name on the application, then if its the wrong man the GRO will not issue the cert and it should save you money as you should recieve a partial refund? No point paying for a cert thats not your man IF you can avoid it
