David Report 5 Oct 2014 15:18

I need some help finding the birth info fo my 2x G grand father, James Anderson. Born in Great Yarmouth Norfolk in 1820 and was a private in the 46th foot, number 1401. He died in the great storm in 1854 in the crimea.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
David Anderson

Welcome to the boards David.

Since civil registration only started in 1837 there won't be a birth certificate so the best you can hope for is a baptism.

Hello David, which of his children was your direct ancestor?

Who was James' wife and where/when did they marry? You'll probably have more chance of finding his father's name from a marriage certificate and then working back from that.

JoonieCloonie Report 6 Oct 2014 23:18

this is him in 1851

Name: James Anderson
Age: 32
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1819
Gender: Male
Where born: Yarmouth, Norfolk, England
Civil Parish: Scarborough
Town: Scarborough
County/Island: Yorkshire

Registration district: Scarborough

the image shows him as an unmarred private in the 46th regiment

so he had a short time to marry and have a child/ren

possibly at age 32 he was married already and the census entry was just sloppy recording

I have received a message from David who is under the misapprehension that I am the person who has helped him and that I work for GR. I hope I have put him straight. :-D

I have advised him to respond on here as you have all been so kind in trying to help him.

David.....if you make it back here, you need to answer the questions you have been asked because it will help folk to continue helping you. Good luck. Cx

I too have received PMs from David, one confirming that we have the correct family and the other: "This is interesting. I have found this too and wondering if it is him"

Not sure what piece of info you are referring to David, but if that is the correct family, then it looks as if the James Anderson who married in the IOM is the same James baptised as Annerson. freereg also has the baptism and gives Samuel's occupation as sailor.

Hi Potty,

David has been on to me again and I have, once again, advised him on how to find his replies.......hope he makes it back here. :-)

JoonieCloonie Report 8 Oct 2014 14:18

I hope he does too ... I have a PM as well:

Yes this is him. He married in 1849 in the I.O.M and went on to lose his life in the great storm in 1854 in the Crimea.
Still looking for confirmation of his birth however.

David **please** do as everybody has asked and type your replies in the box at the bottom of this page (then click 'Submit') and don't keep sending personal messages to people :-)

that is >>> do not click on people's names or on the 'Send Message' button beside their message

you do not want to send a message to any particular person

you want to add a message to this 'thread' just the way all of us are doing!

(and very soon there will be a 'page 2' for this thread so then you will need to click on the '2' at the bottom of it to go to the next page and see more replies)

so now ... can you please tell us how you know that this man died in Crimea?

Chris Ho :)

Chris Ho :) Report 8 Oct 2014 14:44

I got this info from the muster rolls for the 46th at Kew. James lost his life in the great storm in 1854 in the Crimea.

(in answer to my question posted above, from PM also)

Chris :)

David

David Report 8 Oct 2014 17:52

James is recorded in the 46th foot muster rolls.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 8 Oct 2014 18:19

hello there David!

have you ever managed to find James in the 1841 census?

he probably would not be with his parents at that point of course

do you know from his military records or the muster rolls -- when did he join the military?

did you already have James's marriage record showing his father as Samuel Anderson?

that info was posted above for you ...
