Hi Everyone, Our apologies for the posting that occurred on Facebook. This unfortunately was our only option at the time.

For those that have ever experienced "blue screen" drama on their PC, we had a very similar issue on our primary database server. Which effectively took down ALL the websites that run through this box, including all genesreunited sites, www.findmypast.ie, www.findmypast.com.au and some of our internal functionality. None of this was intended or planned and took us a little by surprise.

I do appreciate and agree that Facebook should be a secondary or backup option for making annoucements, but under these circumstances it was our only option.

Sorry,
Phil Moir - Genes Reunited

Thank you Island

I had tried that before and I could not get it to work but seem to be working fine now.

Probably me :-)

GB, as I posted on this thread on May 6th - "You don't have to join Facebook to look at the GR pages"

:-S

GB

that is precisely the same reason why I gave in and joined FB back in February

I also had said that I would never ever join that site.

However, I am not on there under any name that anyone outside a favoured few would know, so I'm safe from unwanted approaches.

Have you made sure that you have ALL the privacy that you can get?

Well finally joined Facebook as fed up with finding out there is more information about this site on there

Something I said I would never do but driven to it my GR's lack on information on THIS site

Well said, I agree.

Your members should be informed first of any scheduled maintenance giving as much notice as possible. A banner at the top of the boards would be best as then a larger number of members are likely to see it.

Scheduled maintenance is an expected hic-cup in using the site and members only get annoyed when not even a cursory thought is given to them. The members on your site are your bread and butter. Without them you have no business and it far easier to keep the members you have than to go touting for business.

It would be appreciated if you would be more considerate to your membership

Peter

If you ever return to this thread to which you posted on May 6th,...................

You are completely missing the point..............

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 7 Jul 2011 21:22

seems so GB

For the record

........... I NEVER go to FB before looking on here

GR is my second stop, after a small private site

Visiting FB is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the list

Please, GR ...................... have the common courtesy to post announcements ON THE SITE where you have paying members! Posting on FB can follow later.

So nothing has changed then.

I do agree; I think it is very wrong to post on facebook about maintenance - six hours ago - and yet not on genes reunited site.

I do realise that Robert and agree completely. I was just airing my views about FB in view of the negative comments. :-)

Facebook is my home page, so I look there first.

The fact that 'non members' are viewing facebook's Genes Reunited page should be seen by all as an opportunity to sell Genes Reunited to all, and to extend our courtesy to them.......

added: 10th May 13:10pm

Genes have made a great effort to improve things, and I believe negative comments on Facebook will gradually 'fade away' - let's get ride of the out of date view that non-paying members are second class - for that is what comes across when I read most of the above posts.

You don't have to join Facebook to look at the GR pages.
Just put "Genesreunited Facebook" into a search engine the click on 'wall' on the left hand side to see what's being announced and discussed.

Cynthia,

No-one is saying you shouldn't use Facebook. Everyone makes their own call on that one.
What is being said any information/announcements regarding this site, which we pay to use, should PRIMARILY be via this site. That is courtesy. If GR feel the need to make that info available later on Facebook, then fair enough, but it should be here first.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 6 May 2011 09:35

I was deadset against FB until those I am friendly with on this site joined and I realised I was 'missing out' on some things :-)

Since joining, however, I absolutely love it as it also keeps me in regular touch with some family members overseas as well as with those I have chosen to be my friends.

I use a pseudonym as I am not particularly interested in being contacted by old school friends and am selective as to the security measures as to who can and cannot view my ramblings :)

I also only post what I am willing to share with others...........private things remain private and do not go onto that site. If I have nothing to say, then I don't say it !

It's really a matter of commonsense to be honest.

I only joined facebook because there was problems on the site and it was the only way to get a speedy response.

I would prefer problems with this site discussed here and your facebook page to be just a marketing tool. Having said that I do enjoy some of the links to articles of interest posted by GR and other members

Flick Report 6 May 2011 08:22

By all means post info on facebook, but put in on here FIRST, for those of us who PAY. That is what is known as common courtesy.

We should not have to learn about changes second-hand, from people who use facebook
