Ahhhhh. Help. I haven't been on for about a week....Whats Happened?

I feel something had to be done to stop duplications on several boards as no matter how hard GR try, there will always be the wrong threads on the wrong boards!

Haven't had chance to look round the changes yet, but the new names for the boards do make it easier to navigate, apart from Geneolopgy chat, don't like this. I would have thought Geneology help sounds better.

Love the emicons - makes the boards fun.

I think it will take a while for me to get used to it and like previous changes on GR, once you get into it, it gets easier.

I like the photos - makes the boards prettier!

I belong to the school of thought where if you are going to do a job then do it properly. The threads should have been sorted first of all and then reassembled onto new boards, not throw them all together and hope they sort themselves out.
Any comments?

This is the first time that I have been on GR boards for so so long. I am impressed with all the changes. Love and Peace to any who may remember me. x <3

Janey

No, I didn't accidently use plurals.

Cynthia Report 9 May 2011 08:18

That's very true Rose. I noticed how many complained about something or other before 'the ink was dry' so to speak. Such is life!

How about having a rose of a different colour and variety each week as your avatar and tell us what it is? Now, that should get some people's dander up......lol

Hi Stella, I echo Toots' welcome to the boards. The boards aren't a mess really but maybe it's just a bit confusing when you first join. It's a great improvement to what they were - honestly. If you want any help, just ask.

:-)

Janey dear, I forgot that you pontificate.....I also forgot about your infallibility :P

It cuts both ways, I have been slated for 'being on GR 24/7, not having a life' etc...idiots come out of the woodwork and have a go whatever you do it seems. They may be hard to ignore but they really aren't worth paying attention to.

Stella, genes reunited support staff usually work Monday to Friday. The other staff that deal with abuse reports are about most of the time.

Island

Charming.

So I guess when you said "It also leaves those with a lower post count open to nasty comments from the minority who seem to think that quantity gives them some sort of superiority" you just accidentally used all those plurals, when in fact one person had done this?

I've had the opposite happen to me numerous times at a site where I have 30,000+ posts over 10 years -- nasty comments about what a loser I must be for having posted all those posts and obviously not having a life. (I type about 1000 words a minute.)

People really will find something to base their nastiness on, won't they?

For some, it's a person's national origin or religion; for others, it's their post count ...

Island Report 8 May 2011 22:44

Janey

I couldn't give a stuff regarding post counts or whether or not you love my comment.
Unfortunately the ratio of posts to years mattered to someone who chose to make a nasty comment to me because it seems my joining date and seemingly low number of posts means I have to mind my Ps and Qs. Some thanks for trying to be helpful eh?

Judging members by post counts happens.

Hi Stella and welcome to the boards.

GR only have a skeleton staff on over the weekend so may be a reason as to why you have not received an answer to your email. Is it a query other members could help you with? :-)

Just found this thread. Would explain why Genes Support haven't read my message let alone answered it. I think it's a complete mess.

I feel like taking a mallet to the unlevel playing field sometimes JC.

I really don't care how many posts someone has made but, like you, I do care when a new poster gets told off unnecessarily.

To be able to see who is new is a great improvement all round.

My messaging has been cut down big style! :D

Oh yeah, and within all that helping that you do, there wouldn't be an itzy bitzy bit of nattering would there? :P lol

I don't think there can be any 'one-upmanship' when it comes to the number of posts anyway...people who have been here longer than me have lower post counts either because

a, they don't gab as much as I do !
b, they delete after a while as 'housekeeping'
c they joined when I did but took even longer to find the chat board than I did, or to pluck up courage ( or need) to post.

however if I were a newbie looking for help on 'finding ancestors' I would possibly be re-assured that someone like Janey for example who has posted a lot, might just know what she is talking about when she gives good advice or info from census' etc?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 May 2011 21:37

By way of an actual suggestion, though -- a large political discussion forum site I use shows only "over 1000" once a user's post count hits that number.

You can see the actual post count there by clicking on a user's profile.

Maybe something like that would level the playing field a little?

I love these unspecified kind of allegations:

"It also leaves those with a lower post count open to nasty comments from the minority who seem to think that quantity gives them some sort of superiority."

Who, where, when?

I have a huge post count because I post a huge amount on trying to find threads. Maybe I should try to help less.

I agree with Cynthia -- it helps loads to see that someone is here for the first time. (No, Cynthia, some of us talk in *your* sleep -- I notice that us night owls, by UK time, tend to have big ones!)

It should put an end to things like "your member number indicates you've been a member here since Eve was in diapers -- why are you doing xyz?" There are many people like I was myself -- a paying user for a couple of years before I even realized there were discussion boards on the site.

As for Tips and Records -- none of the casual users used them for those purposes. They just posted their ancestor hunts there ... and half the time also on TTF, Surname Info, History ... This new organization should cut down on the scourge of multiple time-wasting posts greatly.

Personally, I'm madly in love with virtually all the changes.

This could be my only two posts - first, and last(!) Regarding GR new layout, gimme the old 'un. Regarding e/icons, unnecesary and intrusive. Regarding number of posts, if you don't want to, don't. If you do, make it worthwhile.

Hello IGP,
No, I did not make the suggestion but as GR is a business I would have thought that they should have looked at the Boards Summary order as part of this reorganisation of the Boards.
Came across a similar problem in another hobby I have and a simple changing of the order in a list produced a dramatic improvement in a very short space of time.
