lol! Huia!

It is very weird, but I think it is tied to the emoticon box.

Huai ............. we're just like dinosaurs aren't we, sticking with the old instead of moving onto the neww!

BTW Sylvia, I am on IE7 and dont have the problems you have, so perhaps it is just IE6. I am quite happy with IE7. Like you, I hate waiting around twiddling my thumbs until things load. It takes ages sometimes for me to load photos on emails or onto my new photoblog site. I have to make sure the photo does not have too many kbs or whatever.

Heh, mine isn't due for a while yet, so I have time to sit and wait. ;)

I have to say that with the halving (at least) of new ancestor-find requests, as a result of the gawdawful living relatives thing, the amusement value of the site has dropped way down.

Huia and Janey,

I have my text on Medium ................... and I had no problem last night, in fact, this problem did not appear until today.

It's only since the emoticon box was added to older browsers

and I'm NOT the only one having the problem, so it isn't MY browser or server that is casuing trouble

as to why I continue with IE6 on GR ..................... Mozilla Firefox for GR (and only GR) is impossible slow in loading anything, and in navigating around the site

but ONLY on GR

I've waited 10 minutes for a post to be submitted!

I hate having to wait for things to happen ............................

My sub is due next week.

shall I or shan't I renew?

it's getting too frustrating every day, and no matter which browser I use.

I have mine on very small size, but I enlarged it to make the page wider than the monitor, and the emoticon box just followed the add reply box width.

One of those old-IE compatibility problems? Did you try twiddling with that, Sylvia?

Why people still muck about with IE is beyond me ... :-P

Huia

Huia Report 31 May 2011 23:35

I wonder if those of you whose emoticons extend beyond the width of the reply box might have your type setting on a different size from that which I have. I have mine on the largest size, otherwise I need a very strong magnifying glass to read the print. My emoticons come only as far as the word 'for' in the 'guidelines for message board use' that appears below the emoticons box.

No

on my screen the right hand edge of the emoticon box extends way beyond the right hand edge of the Add Reply Box, and even of the text boxes on the page.

In fact, the right hand edge of the Reply box is just to the left of the heart emoticon.

At least one other person has the same problem with paging

sylvia

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 31 May 2011 21:30

That's odd. Same width as the Add Reply box, isn't it?

It is for me. Until I drag the dots in the Add Reply box to make the $%#& thing big enough that it's actually usable ...

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 31 May 2011 21:24

and I ahve just realised that I have a paging problem

....... which is possibly caused by the fact that the emoticon box below the Reply box is too darned wide for the page!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 31 May 2011 21:12

Not quite fixed!!!

When I click an emoticon to insert it, I want to insert it

*where my cursor is*

not at some random place in the post (which seems to be at the end of the post, or two lines down if I'm inserting it at the end of my typed text).

?

SylviaInCanada Report 31 May 2011 19:56

definitely a YAAAAAAAAY

Thank you Phil and Chris!

plus I can now see the emoticons choice below the reply box in IE6 ..... and can see those emoticons in replies

but not see emoticons caused by "codes"

Yaaaaay!

I have checked back to the infamous Mr. Hill/Monck thread that I happened to have open, 7 pages defaced by random idiotfaces -- reloaded, and they're gone!!

I kind of like the easy codes for the things, e.g. ;) for wink, but I've seen even those that are unlikely to appear in text go awry at other sites that do use them, as well.

Now, if we could only get the two that are missing

- sad face (not frowny face, which is what the traditional sad face :( turned into)
- eyeroll

;-)

It's a little hard to be hugely grateful when a problem that shouldn't have existed takes so long to get fixed, and the people begging for relief only get attention by kicking up a huge fuss anywhere and everywhere available ... but it always feels good when you can stop banging your head against the wall.

Can now see the option to add emoticons but not tried them out

philmoir

philmoir Report 31 May 2011 13:09

We have just rolled out a patch to resolve the unintended appearance of emoticons (thanks to Chris for that). It was caused by the option to allow 2 character shorthand versions to emulate the icons, which we have withdrawn. You can still use emoticons but behind the scenes it will only use three character versions. Our apologies for the frustration this has caused.

To see the change, you MAY have to force a refresh of your browser - this is normally CTRL+F5 together as you browser will cache the settings.

Regards Phil Moir - Genes developer
(I will lock this thread at the end of the day - maybe the owner of the thread can edit the title to include Completed - thanks)

Well I'm having to work! Of course, it's isn't a bank holiday here, and there's no work for me because Parliament doesn't sit until later this week ... well, there's that stuff that was due 3 weeks ago ...

mgnv has also added some other problems he has inadvertently created, in the other thread about this silliness.

I believe they are (with added spaces to prevent the code problem occurring)

= P

makes a dumbface, as in pob=Prince Edward Island

and

S 2

makes a cutesyface, as in Schedule S2

There are undoubtedly others ...

Thank you Phil - sorry you have to work on a Bank Holiday, but it's good to know that the problem is to be addressed. :D
