I believe that when a thread has been reported for review that the only part of the posting still visible should be the topic if anything should remain at all. I was just checking through the boards and their is a posting and the following appears.

Looking for my Biological Mother.
I was born on ..............................at the Royal Victoria.

then when you click on the thread the message appears that it has been requested for review. So this lady's DOB is still very visible even though you can't read all the thread.

What does everyone else think?

Joy

Joy Report 16 May 2011 08:16

I think it ludicrous that the personal information is still visible.

I posted something similar on 11 May, but yours here is worded better, in my opinion :-)

The first line is visible after a report
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/suggestions/thread/1268002
Sometimes, the first line may be the reason that the thread has been reported.

Sorry Joy, I missed your thread and didn't bother to go back through the suggestion board to see if it has been raised before. <3

You are right in this case, it is the first line that's the problem. I'll send an email to support and hopefully they can fix the problem.

Joy Report 16 May 2011 08:51

If only they would enable hyperlinks, as suggested, one could link directly from one thread to another, sigh :-)
and sort out emoticons, then I would know what the less than sign and number three together means :-)

Joy, I have emailed support so I hope they act on the email quickly.

Well I did email support but the email bounced back because of a virus. Have just completed a full scan of my computer and nothing showed up.

Frustrating to say the least.

I will hold my hands up to reporting that one. I was surprised that 20 people had looked at it before me and had not done anything.

Although she mentioned her own date of birth her mothers name was not too common so year of birth was mentioned for her also and even said who she thought she married and when.

Maybe one of those 20 before me helped her and found them on the ER register.....who knows?

Jax,

I sent her a pm and suggested politely to remove her dob. I received a response and the thread was going to be edited, but I think you must have hit the review button before the member in question got back to her post.

I would have removed the post altogether if it was me.

jax Report 16 May 2011 13:49

I was'nt to fussed about her own birth date but I assume she was adopted and did not think it was a good idea to post her mothers details including who she poss married on the internet for all to see including any half siblings that may not know about her.

jax

Edit - Just looked at my emails and GR agree it was not acceptable and it has been removed

Hope the poster has been told why

Gai Report 17 May 2011 01:48

Hi Jax,

This is the response that I received back from GR

Dear Gai

I can see what is happening, but we don't have any plans to change this. You can only see a small amount of the text so it couldn't really be used by anyone.

Kind Regards,

Estelle
Genes Support Team

Very interesting indeed but I'm afraid Gr and me will have to disagree on this point.

JaneyCanuck Report 17 May 2011 03:16

Nah, it isn't a matter of opinion, so there's no disagreement.

There's just the correct position -- that where the first line of the post that remains visible IS the problem, as it has been in two that I know of, it should not be visible once reported for review -- and the wrong position, that the problem doesn't exist.

Nobody could rationally claim that the problem doesn't exist, after seeing even those two posts, so the problem really seems to be that nobody cares.

Gai

Gai Report 17 May 2011 04:37

I'm glad to see the offending post gone unfortunately there will probably be another dozen to replace it in no time.

Joy

Joy Report 17 May 2011 08:41

When the small amount of the text that remains visible includes a name and precise date, it is totally wrong to leave it visible to public view.

Gai Report 17 May 2011 13:06

Well Ladies,

It's great to know that Facebook is being moderated. I posted on Joy's comment the response that GR gave me and it's been whisked away in 2 hours and GR response is written below.

Genes Reunited - All matters regarding moderation of boards should be directed to customer support staff or submitted on our suggestions board. Discussions regarding moderation on the facebook page will be removed.

Oh well maybe we should all give up.

jax Report 17 May 2011 13:29

What is the point of this suggestions page?

I have only seen GR reply to one and that was regarding Facebook on the first day of the new layout.

If they want a modorater I will send in my CV :D

Gai Report 18 May 2011 00:38

I offered my services as a moderator when GR did the members survey a while back. Being in a different time zone I'd thought I would be a shoe in but GR never took up my offer. Oh well there loss.

Joy,

I went to comment on your Facebook thread and it's gone. Did you delete it or GR?

Gai ;-)

Joy

Joy Report 22 May 2011 21:34

Still, the precise date of birth is showing in the first line after a request for review has been made - please, genes reunited staff, sort this out.

Sorry, Gai, I just saw your reply here :-)
I went back later, and it had gone; I posted asking if there was a glitch, two other people posted strange / abusive remarks, so I deleted my question about a glitch :-)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 23 May 2011 00:08

There is a thread on liv-rel right now -- actually two, duplicates -- that was reported for review quite some time ago, even before I saw them.

The full name and exact birthdate of the individual in question (not the poster) is sitting there in the first line of each post, visible in the board list and ALREADY INDEXED BY AND FOUND BY GOOGLE.

... Oh, pardon me, that one that google found me, on a search for the name and birthdate, is actually one of a set of four on Genealogy Chat, also reported for review ...

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1269229

There is a flood of new users, plainly drawn in by publicity, being given NO GUIDANCE on the use of the boards and DISRUPTING this "community".

The "community" is sick to death of this.

Where is the site management?

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 23 May 2011 00:19

Actually I was just in contact with the culprit that you refer to, JC. After I suggested on the genealogy chat board that she should do the honourable thing and delete all of her threads about this individual she pm'd me that she has tried to do so but evidently the ones that have been reported for review can't be deleted. Now isn't that a fine kettle of fish? They'll stay there for all to see until GR decides in their wisdom what's to be done.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 23 May 2011 01:06

Sigh.

I assume that was intended to deal with people who regularly posted distasteful things on the chat boards or elsewhere and then deleted them; apparently no matter how many review requests had been made, once the posts were deleted they were no longer available for review ...
