If we are talking foreign and logging out!!!

Over the last two or three days each time I shut down the computer I need to log into GR again when I click on the icon on rebooting the computer.

I have never had to do this before - only when GR was experiencing technical difficulties, or I have actually logged myself out of the site.

I am on the down under version of GR (.com.au).

This has been happening to me for weeks - long before the emoticon thing happened, and is still the same.

Thanks for the update Phil

I didn't have to log in today so hopefully, fingers crossed, it's sorted.

Thanks to everyone for posting details of this problem. We're very aware of the problem, we're having a hard time replicating it in the office, which makes it harder to track down. the deleting old favourites and readding sounds like its worth a try. Again, thank you for your patience andsorry for the disruption.

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Jun 2011 03:40

I may have solved my problem (fingers crossed!)

I have GR in my Favourites, and just click on that when I want to open the site. It was set so that GR opened on the Community page

I noticed that when I had to log in every time, it took me back to my Home Page and then I had to get back to Community.

So ....................... I re-saved GR in my Favourites, using the Community page

Deleted the "old" one from Favourites

and .......................... I didn't have to log in just now :-D

Bit too geeky for me that Janey, or it could just be I am tired (and maybe the brain is exhausted after watching Britain's Got Talent :-D :-D :-D)

My cache was cleared yesterday.

I thought my very *foreignness* might actually be giving me some protection here (as compared to making me a target as it usually does. ;-) )

But since the problem would really have to be at GR's end, that wouldn't make any sense anyhow ...

Has anybody tried pinging GR to see whether there's a problem that shows up?

In Windows, do this

Open the command window by clicking START, then RUN. Type CMD, and press Enter or click OK.

Type
ping www.genesreunited.co.uk

press "Enter"

see pingOutput

I just did it and got

Request timed out

Same for .com.au

When I ping www.google.ca, I get a response immediately.
... and timed out on pinging www.ancestry.co.uk ... and www.ancestry.ca
... got a reply from www.cbc.ca immediately
... timed out on pinging another discussion board, got a reply from Parliament ... stupidly random, it seems ... but I'm getting replies from Cdn sites and not others maybe

That's the limit of my geekspeak. Phil??

I had to log in again this morning

I'm pretty certain that Janey and I do not have the same server .............. we're separated by about 3000 klicks!

My iPad automatically clears the cache and yet I still keep getting logged out even when I have not navigated away from the site. Sometime I have just changed board to be asked to sign back in.

My laptop also automatically clears the cache daily because I have set it up that way

I have still be experiencing problems however I have only had to log back in again twice today so thats not too bad. Sometimes the site is slow other times it's okay and I haven't done anything different and it can be within a short period of time.

Obviously it is going to take time to sort and I will just have to practice the virtue of patience ;-)

Oh -- Phil. There's a load of people on General Chat who never look here, and are forever starting threads about these things. (Also on Genealogy Chat, heh.)

You might want to keep an eye out and add a note there, too.

In case it helps to know (and I don't in any way mean this to sound like "well it never happens to me ...") ... it never happens to me. ;-)

I've only ever been involuntarily logged off about twice in history, not recently. I'd wonder whether this has to do with my location somehow, except that it does happen to SylviaInCanada.

I actually haven't had any problems with the site at all in the last few days ... a very short period of the "down for maintenance" message, but that's all.

Of course, I did clear my cache twice in the last few days. Snork.

I've had to come in through GR NZ to resume normal service , click on the flag below. Anything else is giving me error /maintenance pages!

Yes thanks Phil, I was getting ready to not put GR on again, it's not worth the wear on my nerves, over 15 minutes it took to open a pm this morning, that's after I had to sign in again to open it. It's only started since the emoticons were put on, co-incidence? or not I don't know.

Thanks Phil

Maybe it would help in future if we could be warned in advance that strange things might happen. (i.e. when maintenance or changes are undertaken.) We would not them bombard you with requests for help.

Just to let you know, we deployed some major infrastructure changes (physical servers and code change) at the end of last week. All in all it went pretty smoothly, but this is one outstanding issue that we are trying to resolve as quickly as we can. Thanks for keeping us informed and we will let you know as soon as a fix is applied.
