I don't think that the problem with having to repeatedly log back that a handful of members are reporting has anything to do with the the particular browser that you are using. Browser incompatibility is more likely to result in web pages failing to display correctly, and with certain functions such as buttons, drop downs etc now working correctly.

Neither do I believe that is a problem that GR alone can solve. If it were a problem with GR's sofware also then the likelihood is that many more members would be having similar problems on a daily basis, which is not the case.

On the rare occasion that I do have to log in again when entering the GR site, I am taken directly to the log in page and my log in details have already been completed. All I have to do is click 'go' and I am in - hardly a big deal.

The fact that my details appear tel me that my browser is correctly remembering my log in and password. If you find that your details are not automatically filled in then the likelihood is that your browser is not set up correctly to remember passwords, or you have cleared them out, perhaps by running a cleanup or av program.

GR won't just log you off because someone there feels like being awkward, but it is possible that certain program updates may require users to log back in. However this is not going to be a daily occurrence.

Another reason why you loose your connection is because of dropouts with your internet connection and GR clocks you as having logged out. I have been having random dropouts this past week with my ISP and on one occasion I was required to log back in on regaining my connection.

Other than advise that you keep your PC OS and browsers up to date, I can't really see what more GR could do unless they are prepared to spend time investigating cases on an individual basis which may not even be possible unless someone comes round and sits in front of your PC.

The problem that Sylvia is reporting with error timeout messages when negotiating the site is a different issue altogether. Again, I don't think it is browser related. This is most probably a problem with lack of processing capacity at GR as the database grows larger by the day and something that is in their remit to fix.

Ken

The problem is that they are telling different people different things!

people using IE8 or Firefox have been told to use Chrome

People using Chrome have been told to use Firefox, or IE8

I told them I was using Mozilla Firefox, updated last week ........... and they tested the thread opening problem using IE8 and Google Chrome

one would surely expect that IE8, Firefox and Chrome are 3 of the main browsers??

and that the most up-to-date version of each one should always work

instead one gets the same runaround that I've received from FriendsReunited and GR for the last 8 or so years ...................

it is always MY browser that is at fault.

"Should they not be trying to make sure that their site works properly on all browsers? Or is that too simple."

It's not too simple it's just rather lengthy. There are numeorous browsers and not everyone has the latest version of their favourite one. To test all facilities on all browsers is just not realistic.

Presumably GR check with the latest versions of the most common browsers before releasing and then with others if faults get reported.

Ahhhh.....the classic run-around....... been going on for years just to keep the punters busy and confused...... hoping they will eventually give up or go mad.

Perhaps we should all go on strike....*grins evilly*

Ann

too simple!!

Both FR and GR have blamed the member's browser ever since I made my first complaint to FR, back in about late 2004

First response to ANY problem .......... it must be your server and/or browser.

EXTREMELY annoying when people from all around the world are complaining about the same problem ...... using all different kinds fo servers and browsers.

I've been hearing the same excuse for around 8 years .......... and it gets tedious!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Feb 2012 01:26

Just had to log in

worked on the second attempt ........... after almost 30 seconds!

AnninGlos Report 10 Feb 2012 21:36

I think somebody once told them that if there is a problem blame the person's browser.

Should they not be trying to make sure that their site works properly on all browsers? Or is that too simple.

I'm having daily "conversation" with GR re being unable to open My Threads on most attempts, as well as a side issue of a similar problem in opening certain threads with over about 400 pages.

Each reply has been from a different person ...... 4 so far

Today, I was told that the staffer had tried to replicate my problem with the threads (no mention of My Threads) .......... and had had no problem using IE8 and Chrome

I'd told them in an email 2 days ago that I use Mozilla Firefox :-S

I don't have either Chrome or IE8

and I have no intention of installing another browser just for GR

There is an emoticon available of a "smilie" banging its head in frustration against a brick wall

I want that emoticon right now!

I have now been advised to ues chrome or IE. Easy isn't it? Blame the users browser instead of investigating the cause. I am not changing browsers as nothing similar happens on other sites.
*waits for IGP's input! :-)

AnninGlos Report 9 Feb 2012 12:04

So I e mailed them and this is the reply

'Thanks for your email and letting us know.

If you continue to have probelms please tell us and we will investigate this further for you.'

I am confused, we have had problems for a fair amount of time now, why wait until it continues before investigating. I am of the opinion that they do not know why. I did direct Alex to this thread, don't know if he checked it out though.

After a second reply to my e mail to GR and after following their advice to clear cache (I run Ccleaner regularly but this morning I ran Advanced system care as well), I was able to get in without signing in, although of course had to log in as I had cleared all history. Then I deleted the bookmark I had and created a new one. I shall see what happens tomorrow now. :-)

AnninGlos Report 7 Feb 2012 17:02

Gosh, it is annoying when you contact GR with the problem and the reply you get is to 'tick the remember me box'. Apparently then everything will be hunky dory. Well, sorry, my box is ticked it makes no difference.

IGP I do get fed up by unhelpful comments like that. I am not computer illiterate despite my great age.

How, I want to know, does it happen that one or two e mail alerts from GR go into spam when the others don't. a fair enough question and I was not 'blaming' GR but asking the question so I could solve it. It has not been unknown for things to be changed slightly so that a computer can eject the e mail into spam. If nothing has changed I will look at other reasons but thank you for your so helpful reply. and I am so pleased for you that you don't have a problem.

It has only been in the last week that I have had to sign in and this morning log in to reply. Now I have stayed with co.uk since I had a problem a couple of weeks ago but maybe I shall try ZA again. Before they did this last lot of 'updating' I had not had a problem for months.

By the way I enter via my bookmark of the site.

I can probably set myself up in Chrome ... Joy... I do have to put e-mail address etc via Chrome... but that is because I don't use it...

Best not to get paranoid Joy... I know for certain that that is not a good computer link... very insecure....

Off to bed now very late this side of the world...
