I think somebody once told them that if there is a problem blame the person's browser.

Should they not be trying to make sure that their site works properly on all browsers? Or is that too simple.

Just had to log in

worked on the second attempt ........... after almost 30 seconds!

Ann

too simple!!

Both FR and GR have blamed the member's browser ever since I made my first complaint to FR, back in about late 2004

First response to ANY problem .......... it must be your server and/or browser.

EXTREMELY annoying when people from all around the world are complaining about the same problem ...... using all different kinds fo servers and browsers.

I've been hearing the same excuse for around 8 years .......... and it gets tedious!

Ahhhh.....the classic run-around....... been going on for years just to keep the punters busy and confused...... hoping they will eventually give up or go mad.

Perhaps we should all go on strike....*grins evilly*

"Should they not be trying to make sure that their site works properly on all browsers? Or is that too simple."

It's not too simple it's just rather lengthy. There are numeorous browsers and not everyone has the latest version of their favourite one. To test all facilities on all browsers is just not realistic.

Presumably GR check with the latest versions of the most common browsers before releasing and then with others if faults get reported.

Ken

The problem is that they are telling different people different things!

people using IE8 or Firefox have been told to use Chrome

People using Chrome have been told to use Firefox, or IE8

I told them I was using Mozilla Firefox, updated last week ........... and they tested the thread opening problem using IE8 and Google Chrome

one would surely expect that IE8, Firefox and Chrome are 3 of the main browsers??

and that the most up-to-date version of each one should always work

instead one gets the same runaround that I've received from FriendsReunited and GR for the last 8 or so years ...................

it is always MY browser that is at fault.

I don't think that the problem with having to repeatedly log back that a handful of members are reporting has anything to do with the the particular browser that you are using. Browser incompatibility is more likely to result in web pages failing to display correctly, and with certain functions such as buttons, drop downs etc now working correctly.

Neither do I believe that is a problem that GR alone can solve. If it were a problem with GR's sofware also then the likelihood is that many more members would be having similar problems on a daily basis, which is not the case.

On the rare occasion that I do have to log in again when entering the GR site, I am taken directly to the log in page and my log in details have already been completed. All I have to do is click 'go' and I am in - hardly a big deal.

The fact that my details appear tel me that my browser is correctly remembering my log in and password. If you find that your details are not automatically filled in then the likelihood is that your browser is not set up correctly to remember passwords, or you have cleared them out, perhaps by running a cleanup or av program.

GR won't just log you off because someone there feels like being awkward, but it is possible that certain program updates may require users to log back in. However this is not going to be a daily occurrence.

Another reason why you loose your connection is because of dropouts with your internet connection and GR clocks you as having logged out. I have been having random dropouts this past week with my ISP and on one occasion I was required to log back in on regaining my connection.

Other than advise that you keep your PC OS and browsers up to date, I can't really see what more GR could do unless they are prepared to spend time investigating cases on an individual basis which may not even be possible unless someone comes round and sits in front of your PC.

The problem that Sylvia is reporting with error timeout messages when negotiating the site is a different issue altogether. Again, I don't think it is browser related. This is most probably a problem with lack of processing capacity at GR as the database grows larger by the day and something that is in their remit to fix.

IGP, Thank you, at least that is a comprehensive explanation and I will get my OH to check me that I have everything checked that should be with my browser. I did look and couldn't see any problems but I may have missed something. What is annoying is I get taken to the page which asks me to sign in, I do and then click on one of the boards, I am then asked to log in before I can reply. But my little brain tells me I have just done that. I don't understand why twice. But it is really no big deal so I can't be bothered to get worked up about it. :-) :-)

Sylvia mine times out frequently but I just assume it is the system not coping, annoying but not life threatening I suppose.

And for both of the above, what I think, puzzles people is the fact that this did not happen, or not all the time, before the latest big update.

Kense Report 11 Feb 2012 09:48

I agreee IGP, when I made my last post I forgot that this thread was supposed to be about logging in.

Like you when I have to log in again is is a simple one click operation.

I actually have to put in my e mail address every time I have to log in. Do you?

Kense

Kense Report 11 Feb 2012 16:31

No, email and password are set up. However if you are not the only one using the PC then that may not be possible.

"I actually have to put in my e mail address every time I have to log in. Do you?"

- in this site, yes, most of the time, unless it decides to put it for me, sometimes putting Password in place of the email address.

- in other sites: no, never.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Feb 2012 00:57

IGP .......... your posting makes sense, except that I cannot understand why it should happen ONLY with GR, and not with any of the other sites that I visit.

Ann ........... I do have to enter my email address.

I have this computer set up to automatically remember sign ins and passwords for most of my site.

When I have to log in on GR, I am faced with 2 blank boxes, 1 for email address and 1 for password.

I only type the first letter of my email address, and a drop down box appears that contains that address. I click on that, and then the password is automatically added. All I have to do then is click on Go

However, approximately 50% of the time, I am then taken to another sign in page............... where I have tor repeat the whole operation once again, just like Ann has found.

No problem opening Inbox, Suggestions, threads, or moving from page to page within a thread.

Have not yet tried My Threads.

I do now have GR.co.za in my Bookmarks for immediate use in the event .co.uk decides to act up

SylviaInCanada Report 13 Feb 2012 19:28

Today's email in the sequence from GR, from Estelle:-

"we are really sorry for all the problems you have been having. All of the details ahve been passed on to Phil and the tehnical team. You are not the only one experiencing these error messages. Phil will take a look at this when time allows. As I am sure you udnerstand our technical team are very busy. They are quite a small team and work on problems in order of priority.

I am very sorry for the inconvenience."

-------------------------

I replied as follows:-

"I do understand that the development team is very busy. But it is also very frustrating when all these problems are not being sorted, and corrected.

It does, however, seem to me that having a correctly operating system, with problems experienced by members being corrected, would be of higher priority than is seemingly the case. After all, many of these problems have been on-going for almost 6 months.

I know of many members who have given up in disgust, and left the site. I'm still hanging in there ........ but even my patience is running out!

I know what GR can do .................. and am still hoping that it will soon be back to that."

-----------------

now to wait again ........... and again .............. 'cos it is upto the development team!
