Everyone, we are still trying to investigating this as a major priority. We have a people from Genes team and technical staff from some of our sister sites and parent company, Bright Solid, looking into the issue. I am going to put up a blog post about the issue tomorrow with some advice, but I don't want you to think we are forgetting about you and this problem.

Our fullest apologies for the inconvenience. And yes I am experiencing the problem too now! It is frustrating. Phil

As a small suggestion (NOT a solution), if you are logged in and click on something and it asks you to login again (as opposed to entering your password - those pages are intended), then hit the back button and then press CTRL+F5 to refresh your page. I tried this today and my login details remained at the top of the page, I then tried the action again, and it did not ask me to log in the second time. I don't know if this will work for the moment but you can only try.

Thank you, Phil. I am glad, in one way, that you have experienced this issue too ;-)

It is intermittent; sometimes I have to log in, sometimes I don't. :)

Thanks Phil, as Joy says it is intermittent.

Persephone Report 24 Jun 2011 15:38

I have become accustomed to intermittent... it is a way of life on here now.. I too can be logged on and then a pm will come via e-mail and I will stupidly click the reply and then the request to log on comes up again. I just have to remember to slap myself and use the one I am already in and go to the message box.
But then sometimes it says there is a message there but it is tricking me cause there isn't.
If I do go to Messages, I can't go to in box or sent or contacts because as soon as I move the mouse down the drop down box disappears.... there it is and then there it isn't so I have to drag the mouse. Same with the boards.... have to drag the mouse down otherwise it is a case of oh no it's gorn.

I won't talk about my tree cause that's hopeless as well I will scroll the suggestion page and see who else is having problems.

I have just realised that the ever present white envelope at the top of mine is no longer present. Thanks Phil if you fixed it. :-) :-) :-)

I have to log in to GR about 95% of the time after closing the site , and always after shutting down the computer.

I never used to do that, I was permanently logged in.

Plus it never remembers my password, even though I keep clicking and re-clicking that little box.

Fortunately, I have not yet experienced having to log in while on the site.

Still not fixed then?? Logged in this morning, left the computer (did not log out or shut down) and had to log on when I came back on here. It put me straight into the gen board but then said 'log in to reply.

I did NOT have to log in when I came on to this site about 30 minutes ago ................ and the power had been turned off for about 19 hours!

Power being turned off usually means that I have to log in, so this was quite a turn around!

I thought I had a theory, went and tested it but it did not work.

Believed that if I have all my tabs open and close them all at once I have to log back into GR next time I open it.

Just tried it and back to the drawing board.

I have had to log into this site on an increased number of times in the last few days. Now this is interesting for some reason I am logged into .co.uk instead of my usual .com.au site. Will remedy that.

Hmmm wonder if this is why I am having to log in.

AuntySherlock

AuntySherlock Report 26 Jun 2011 22:25

Closed GR. Went to desktop and chucked icon in recycle bin. Googled GR and had to type genesreunited.com.au into the address bar to make it appear.
Clicked on the address on google and it opened straight into the site, no logging in.

It has got to be the cookies.

To everyone. I genuinely appreciate the efforts made and reported here in trying to help us narrow down this problem. I am also suspicious about the cookies. Will keep you updated as soon as we have something.

Phil

perhaps I should say here that my computer was in the computer hospital for its annual checkup last week.

We picked it up on Tuesday morning .......... they cleaned it of all cookies, a few nasties, etc etc

I always have to log-in on all my sites after its check-up ........... and that is exactly what happened on Tuesday 21st June

However, I am still logged in on my other sites, but I had to log-in onto GR every time the computer was shut down after that initial one

....... that is, until 4:05 am 26 June (afternoon of the 25th, my time)

so I'm not that convinced that it is cookies.

I knew it was too good to last!

Turned off computer this afternoon, but not the power, when I went out for an hour or so

Have just had to log-in again

so back to square one!

AuntySherlock

AuntySherlock Report 28 Jun 2011 08:32

Last week I had been logged into the .co.uk site and several times I have had to log in again after either closing down the computer or exiting out of GR.

Since my last post 22.55hrs 26 June when I went back into the .com.au site I have not had to log in at all. And I have been using GR lots.

We have just rolled out a change that we hope will prevent the majority of users experiencing the effect of not being kept logged in as well as being logged out unexpectedly.

We eventually managed to track down a couple of situations where we could emulate the problem of a user being logged out even though we had clicked on Remember Me when logging in. One of these was replying to a message in your inbox. It wouldn't log you out immediately, but it would alter the cookies that we store to prevent you having to log in again, such that next time you restarted your browser, you would be asked to log in.

The change made resolves this issue. We also made a couple more changes based on the same criteria, that we hope will also prevent the situation where you are unexpectedly thrown to the login screen.

I don't want to tempt fate by saying this is completely resolved, but I am hoping that the majority of users will no longer suffer from this bug.

The first time you use Genes after this release, you may have to log in. If you select remember Me and don't clear your cookies, you should be fine after that. Please, and I'm sure you will, let me know if you still experience issues with regard to not remembering that you are logged in or you get pushed to the login screen unexpectedly.

My FULLEST apologies for all the annoyance over the last month in relation to this issue.

NB We could not detect any reason why the .co.za site seemed less affected by this issue, but all sites should be fine now.

Best Regards, Phil Moir
