Susan10146857 Report 6 Jun 2011 23:02

Although the way it was before wasn't exactly perfect by any means, at least GR would have known if there was more than one person who was annoyed about a post with, maybe, many reasons given, therefore making it more understandable as to why the post may annoy more than one. This way, only one person has to RR and the post is automatically deleted. Silly, if you ask me.

On the contrary Ginny..they are laughing all the way to the bank...maximum control...minimum input.

As I say...I know it was the case a while back and it will need clarifying as to whether it still is...but to a degree I do think there is a case for a non members being able to rr if they feel their privacy or those of a family member is being compromised.

£15(or whatever it is these days) is a lot of money for some to shell out to protect their privacy.when they have no other desire but that to use the site x

Gee Report 6 Jun 2011 22:44

I was on earlier and I couldn’t reply to a post because I wasn’t signed in....but I could see the threads/posts

So maybe the vindictive people are looking in....and can’t answer back

...how frustrating for them...bless

Everything but common sense is allowed here

TootyFruity Report 6 Jun 2011 22:30

That is stupid to allow free members who cannot post to be able to request review. It makes GR powerless to prevent the situation of vindictive request reviews continuing.

Joy Report 6 Jun 2011 22:16

As Muffy, posted, all members have been able to report a post or thread or personal message.

Edited - just looked in terms and conditions and presumably this would apply to all members

I stand to be corrected...but that has been the case in the past ..may be worth clarifying x

I knew non paying members could read the boards, but did'nt know they can request review though

I had no idea that was possible -- that non-paying members could report posts. How bizarre.

Maybe not if the posts are about their family or something, but otherwise, weird.

The right and left hands don't seem to have got themselves fully coordinated as yet.

I had another assurance that this problem was being noted and dealt with ... and then the post I referred to above (in which I gave a list of information, and requested very simply that the duplicate thread on General Chat be deleted, if I recall correctly, anyhow) was deleted.

I have, of course, requested an explanation.

Muffyxx

Muffyxx Report 6 Jun 2011 21:57

Nothing will change whilst GR allow non paying members to Request review...the culprits will be banned from the site...only to return with a different email address immediately afterwards ! Won't cost them a penny or too much hassle either x

Check this one out

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1270691

I had posted a list of what Canadian BMDs and censuses can be found on the net (in particular free of charge), what privacy cutoff dates generally are, and explained that whoever is offering Cdn lookups only has the same access as anyone else with Ancestry Canada or worldwide has.

I may also have suggested that the poster delete the thread on General Chat about the same thing.

Another email is on the way to Estelle ...

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 5 Jun 2011 21:53

True -- and we should also remember that a lot of the "chat" in that thread, apart from the discussions of the absolutely unbelievable number of baths some people take and their inventive other ways of wasting water and electricity !!, is actually about ancestor hunts. The thread lets helpers consult about threads they're trying to help in and draw one another's attention to threads that need help.

jax

jax Report 5 Jun 2011 21:01

Coluld it be that someone wants Ginnys thread transferred to the chat board??

Would not serve any purpose there if it was

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 5 Jun 2011 19:33

A to Z of hobbies
and
Answer a question with a question

are perfect examples of how useful a "request transfer" option would be.

The text of the post would not need to be deleted pending review, as is the case for posts that are genuinely abusive or that disclose personal info improperly.

The staff would just get the request and decide to transfer or not.

I suspect that with some of these ancient game/quizzie threads being dredged up this weekend, someone who finds their presence on General Chat really annoying has used the only available option to request that they be transferred.

People who post on General Chat but never look anywhere else (like this board) have no idea there have been discussions of posts on wrong boards and what might be done with them, for instance, so they assume someone has called the thread "abusive".

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 5 Jun 2011 19:30

Cynthia, no -- the GR team can't stop anyone from reporting a post as abuse.

The text of the post is automatically removed, pending review of the report.

When a decision on the report is made, either the text of the post is reinstated or the post is removed.

(If the OP in a thread is removed, the thread is removed.)

There have been a lot of instances of left hands and right hands not knowing what the other is doing at GR in the past, definitely.

For instance, my very reasonable post asking why people were posting lookups on Genealogy Chat was deleted as "abusive" (and I will not quote what else was said to me by staff about it) ... and about 2 days later the pinned post appeared at the top of that board saying what I'd said, in rather firmer terms.

But it's the sinister hand of the vindictive post reporters that is making the reports, and the right hand of GR that is reinstating the posts. ;-)

Now, the left and right hands of the vindictive post reporting brigade may not know what each other is doing, true, in that case. They might want to let one another know rather smartly.
