Hang on there a cotton pickin minute....none members can report posts?

That has to be the most stoopid thing I heard this week

If a none member wants to report a post then they should have to email GR with the details

Hmmmm.....note to self. Email GR and ask what this is all about ;-)

There is no such animal as a non-member.....!

There are four categories of membership available for the Genes Reunited Service:

(A) Free Membership;
(B) Standard Membership; or
(C) Gold Membership (only available as a renewal option for existing Gold members); or
(D) Platinum Membership

I think you knew what I meant!

To my mind it is wrong to allow 'free' members the facility of using the report abuse button. There are several ex paying members who will have grudges against people on here and who will take great delight in causing a bit of mayhem because in their petty little minds they will find it funny. I suppose, as we did when they were on the boards, we will have to learn to rise above it.

Jonesey Report 7 Jun 2011 17:19

I see Annie's post has been requested for review so I expect mine will be too but here goes:

Do I understand things correctly? Anyone can become a free member of Genes Reunited without making any commitment or monetary payment merely by registering on the site. That then entitles them to do everything that a standard member can do with the exception of posting on the message boards.

Oh what joy, oh what fun! Come all you Tom, Dick or Harriet's. Got nothing better to do, then why not have a bit of sport. Log on and cause a bit of mayhem. Report a few posts simply for the fun of it. Get banned or have already been banned, no problem, simply register again using a different email address and away you go.

Sounds to me just about as sensible as giving an alcoholic the key to the bar.

Uggers Report 7 Jun 2011 17:20

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this but GR have always told off those who are over eagerly reporting others - I remember someone being suspended for reporting the same person repeatedly years ago. What they can't - I suppose - do much about is several people getting together in these sad little vendettas because obviously there's a variety of reporters.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 7 Jun 2011 17:22

Oh I obviously hit a nerve there then. anyone on the boards report my post about free members and trouble makers/people with a warped sense of humour? What fun they are having!

Jonesy :-D :-D :-D

AnninGlos Report 7 Jun 2011 17:26

The trouble is, all this must have increased the workload of support tenfold!!

It is of course half term in some areas so maybe the children are bored.

Rambling Report 7 Jun 2011 17:36

LOL sorry Ann. but I am sure this is the first time I have ever seen something you've said being reported ;-)

and given your reasonable and well mannered posts at all times... the rest of us don't stand a chance !

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Jun 2011 17:39

AnninGlos -- send an email to [email protected] giving the URL of the thread and requesting that the report be given the appropriate attention -- and if the post is deleted, asking why.

I just checked my email to make sure that was the correct email address ... and I have a reply to my request for an explanation yesterday.

My first post in this thread *was* deleted

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1270691

but it's back now!

The information that abusive reports put the reporters in jeopardy of having their memberships cancelled was repeated (in the email I just got) ... but now that it seems that non-paying members can simply keep registering for free, even if their free account is cancelled, I'm afraid this is a hollow threat maybe.

The solution seems to be to allow only paying members to post on *and report posts on* the message boards.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 7 Jun 2011 17:56

I have done that Janey.

Gee

Gee Report 7 Jun 2011 18:10

Well this is real stupid behaviour. I saw your post Ann and there was nothing abusive at all in the content

So, come out come out who ever you are and reveal yourself....or maybe you cant if you are a 'banned' 'free member' of GR

Muffyxx

Muffyxx Report 7 Jun 2011 18:32

......Or maybe a not banned free member...No one knows.... so I don't think it's very fair to point the finger in any direction...

and no it wasn't me that rr'd it but most of the members of the site that left not so long ago left for this exact reason. Because the malicious reporting ended up getting good friends of ours banned...I know for a fact that it's not the ones that left doing it...or the friends of mine that have been banned.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Jun 2011 18:49

Rest easy, Muffy, I didn't think anyone was pointing hints in that particular direction. ;-)

I think most people who spend most of their time on the help boards aren't familiar with those events (I know I'm not), and they/we are the ones who seem to be bearing the brunt of this particular campaign.

Muffyxx

Muffyxx Report 7 Jun 2011 19:03

Well it does happen on both boards...and as you say it seems it's the help boards that it's spread to for now.

I'm sure no one was accusing my friends...I just wanted to make sure that the finger wasn't pointed in their direction just because some of them are banned x

Contrary Mary Report 7 Jun 2011 19:15

Having been a paid member for a few years now, I'd totally forgotten that *free members* are able to read and report posts.

Seems to me that that should be changed........read by all means but not be able to report.

Quite how GR would be able to manage that I'm not sure, but it must be possible?

Mary

Gee

Gee Report 7 Jun 2011 19:17

Sorry I wasnt pointing a finger at anyone in particular. I dont know who has been banned or not

All I know for sure is 'it is someone' and it's getting silly

We'll have nothing to read soon as they will all be under review!

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 7 Jun 2011 19:25

Surely GR could only accept reports of abuse from the holders of free memberships via email to abuse@ and the RR be disabled unless you are logged in as a paying member

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 7 Jun 2011 21:46

No Muffy I wasn't pointing a finger at those people. I was talking 'to' the ones who caused those people to leave, the ones who caused trouble by consistently stirring it for 'fun'.

edit: I think this is the post that resulted in an e mail to me. See my post below.
