1. From what I can see is that the changes to GR are all copied from FMP
The Board lists are all the same. I know they are now owed by the same company but thought there would be some difference.
Found a ships manefest which came up as a blank page - reported it to GR.
However paid to view the same manifest on FMP because I need it urgently and it came up exactly the same.
What is the point of making suggestions for changes on GR then.

2. Why can't the 1901 census records be download- with the directional arrows the same as others census on GR. It is in PDF and can't be enlarged to be viewed properly.

3. What has happened to the list of contact tree updates that used to appear on one's home page. I found it very useful.

4. GR encourages members to attached records to their trees. However there is no option to remove an incorrect attachment. I stopped doing it becasue of this when I made a mistake :-(

When I amended some mistranscribed names on FMP I noticed they had changed on here too.

Those codes are for phil to use IGP not us

Quote from Phil on his house cleaning thread

Therefore, as an exercise so that I can identify that I have reviewed all threads, I am going to

(a) prefix thread titles with ENH, BUG, CMT, QST to idicate type - (I hope to implement a topic type selection in a later release)

So if members are going to add a code he may therefore think he has reviewed the thread, so what a waste of time that would be

jax

jax Report 3 Sep 2011 18:28

Why would a poster scroll through all the threads to find a code?

As I see it it is for Phil to do when he has reviewed the thread

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 3 Sep 2011 19:15

IGP why did you delete your post?

By doing so the conversation between Jax and yourself becomes nonsensical. It would have been better to leave it at least long enough for Phil to read because he may have wished to give an opinion.

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 3 Sep 2011 19:38

Its might be just me but I don't see the point in deleting whether I am winning or losing a debate.

Once my opinion is voiced and replied to or challenged, it would be very discourteous for me to then delete, leaving the people who took the time to reply in good faith, to look as though they are talking to themselves.

I guess it is just good manners not to delete

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 3 Sep 2011 20:21

IGP I never said it was your problem I was just expressing an opinion on deleting posts in a thread.

It's not my problem either

IGP

Suggest you change your board name to something more suitable

Invisible Man , Invisible Green Pen , Invisible Green Man -- spring to mind

IGP I have no problem with anyone, I just take it that anyone who deletes does not really have a belief in their opinion and feel it better to delete than to defend their position or admit that maybe they where wrong or had not considered all variables.

Let's face it two people can read the same article but get different interpretations from it. It is only by hearing both can a greater understanding be achieved.

jax Report 4 Sep 2011 01:50

I only said the ENH codes or whatever they are, were to do with Phil not us. That was the only point in your post IGP that I queried

Now I am talking to myself again but I shall not delete.

Susanne IGP may have given you some advice but he has chosen to delete it ???

I read all the comments - not sure I understand what is going on.

Point 3 - I found it. - wish there had been some information about the change - wish they had left it where it was. Would have preferred they moved the hot matches to a drop dpwn menu

Hope Phil does com in and comment at some point

:-D

As promised, I have now completed the removal of all my earlier postings on this thread.

I would also be extremely grateful if all references to me i.e, IGP are also removed within the next 24 hours.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 7 Sep 2011 05:17

what an interesting thread!

IGP ................... you cannot ask anyone to remove any posts on this thread.

The posts are NOT abusive.

The people are not posting any private information.

Each post on its own was responding to a previous post ..... which happened to have been posted by you.

You may have realised that people have now learned to mention the name of the poster if it is realised that the poster constantly removes postings. You are not the only GR member who does this!

The next step, one that I have used on other sites, but not commonly on GR, is to c&p the post to which I am replying, so that it is still there for all to see.

It has all become so very childish!

Ok, today's release is over (see blog http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/blog.page/phil-moir/archive/2011/9/7/technical-update-7th-september-2011) and I can breathe again - well until I start to look at the Suggestions board.

Looks like my input is needed here :-)

To clear something up, Genes Reunited and Find My Past, along with several other websites are owned and developed by staff who work for Bright Solid. All data records are either owned by Bright Solid or licensed to Bright Solid for use via these websites. We are one company. We're all a very friendly bunch of developers (across all sites inc Scotlands People, FMPie, FMPau, British Library, Friends Reunited, Dating, etc.) and share knowledge, data where practical, as well as tea and coffee!

With regard to transcription errors. We try to update all sources when we get informed of errors, so yes you may see them corrected in both sites.

With regard to images not loading. It is usually the case that the specific image has an error with it, and as such, where we use the same Bright Solid source, it is unlikely to display in either. This is not a fault with the site, it is a fault with the image. And in each case they need to be investigated one by one.

The 1901 census is currently held in PDF format. Believe me this is as much a pain for me as yourself, and I am looking at getting a jpg version for delivery instead of the PDF. Then it would use the same image viewer as ALL the other images on the site. As a PDF it can be downloaded, you just need to use the Adobe viewer icons that appear when you hover over the top or the bottom of the viewer depending on which version of the Adobe viewer (we don't create this) you have installed.

My Updates has returned to the home page in today's release.

Detaching records can be done. In the tree, select the person. Go to Gallery, and click on the relevant attach record/image icon. This will give you a pop up on screen, asking if you want to detach or view the record. A bit long winded but it does work.

The BUG, ENH, CMT added to title are for categorisation of suggestions threads, and yes it does help a little if I add them, but to be honest, I don't mind. I am trying to keep a handle on the board anyway.

I am really sorry that I missed anyone's posts before they were removed, and apologise for not checking on this thread sooner.

I hope this post helps to clarify a few points.

Now to review the other threads. :-)

Re Boards, not quite sure I understand

1. From what I can see is that the changes to GR are all copied from FMP
The Board lists are all the same. I know they are now owed by the same company but thought there would be some difference.

I do not think there are boards on FMP. Are there?

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 7 Sep 2011 18:09

Thank you for clearing things up Phil. FMP.ie has boards

philmoir

philmoir Report 7 Sep 2011 18:20

I thought the reference may be in regard to FMP.ie They are using the same technology that Genes uses, but the boards, threads and posts are NOT shared between sites.
