Karen in the desert Report 29 Nov 2011 14:44

Strangely enough I don't appear to be having problems on any other site except GR, which is an absolute joke at the moment....I am sick of the sight of error messages blah blah blah .

Come on GR, stop messing about with things that don't need to be fixed and get the broken stuff fixed - please. It's gone on for too long now!! :-P

GB

Like you, I have been involved with using computers since about 1970/71 ............ and may not know HOW they work, but I sure do know WHEN sites are not working correctly!

It really is getting beyond the bounds of any belief ......... how many problems there are on this site, how no-one seems able to correct them, and how patient the members are.

Does fmp have as many problems?

If not, why not .... when they are part of the same company

GR has become a joke since the take over by BrightSolid was completed last year .................. and cynical old me wonders if this is all part of a scheme to get rid of GR

There was a long delay between the time that BS "bought" the FR/GR family and the time when they actually took control .......... caused by the fact that the British Competition board (not sure of its exact name) had to investigate to ensure that a take-over that put 3 of the 4 largest genealogy sites in the hands of one company would not result in the loss of one or more of those companies.

Seems to me that GR is on the losing end of the stick right now!

Wonder if it is possible to appeal last year's decision to allow the take-over???

I know I am only a Standard member, and am not losing anywhere near as much money as those poor souls who have paid for Gold and Platinum ...................... but every member has a right to complain when they are not getting service for which they have paid.

How many of the millions of free members have been unable to work on their trees, and thinking it is THEIR computer that is at fault?

I just got the OOPS when posting a message

hit the Back button

and the message had posted successfully

so what does that mean???

Joy

Joy Report 29 Nov 2011 21:34

From googling OOPS definition

oops/o?ops/
Exclamation:
Used to show recognition of a mistake or minor accident, often as part of an apology.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 29 Nov 2011 21:42

so it goes from OOOPS cannot find the page

to successful posting, in seconds

What about a word with Trades Descriptions.
It´s clear that the site isn´t suitable for the purpose & people are being charged large amounts of money under false pretences.

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 30 Nov 2011 08:03

It would certainly help if the GR team tried to communicate with the members.

What problems with this site are they actually working on and which have been given priority ?

Which of the many suggestions are they going to take on board ?

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 30 Nov 2011 08:14

Different sort of computers in 1970, in fact less powerful than a Sinclair ZX or a pocket calculator.....!

The PC wasn't introduced until 1981 and the internet wasn't widely available to the public until 1991, so a different ball game altogether today.

Yes, there are capacity problems with the GR site, but lets face it, for most members it works ok for the majority of the time.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Nov 2011 08:17

I guess one of us will have to post AGAIN on Facebook

as that seems to be the only place where a member of GR is willing to respond

This whole site, not just this Suggestions Board, now seems to be completely ignored

They've even stopped apologising, let alone giving updates on what is going on.

I'm really, really disappointed in GR now

I thought it was starting so well after all the changes earlier this year .............. the setting up of the Suggestion Board, the promise that GR staff would be constantly watching, and responding

didn't take long did it?!

ah well

I shall most probably not be renewing next year! After all, I only spend time on here to help others. I never use any of the records, and only a small fraction of my tree is on here.

so it's no skin off my nose if I leave the site .................... but, if I may be allowed to say, it will be a much bigger loss for GR than to me.

Gee

Gee Report 30 Nov 2011 09:07

I use the pc all day if I dont have a class at work. I research as part of my job and therefor am accessing about 50 different sites a day.....no trouble with them at all

........lunch time or scive time I log on to GR.......and guess what I get, go on, try, you'll never get it????

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 30 Nov 2011 12:51

The expression " teaching grandmother to suck eggs" springs to mind.

Agree with everything that Sylvia has said. Unless GR pull out their finger then I will probably not bother to renew my membership. I also only use this site to help out others while I have membership of Ancestry and FMP.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Nov 2011 17:31

IGP

I agree that there is a massive difference in the power of computers then and now

The first computer I ever used was in 1963 ............ it covered one full wall, from floor to ceiling and side wall to side wall, and took hours to do its "work".

HOWEVER, long experience with computers does allow one to know what one should be able to get from those computers at whatever period of time.

As a long-time end-user of computers, I KNOW what I should be getting

....... and GR is not delivering.

I don't think that there is any way round that fact.

Quoting a post on 30 November
"Yes, there are capacity problems with the GR site, but lets face it, for most members it works ok for the majority of the time." - we do not know that for a fact.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 5 Dec 2011 12:47

I do.....!

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 5 Dec 2011 13:22

I shall regret asking this question

How do you know that for most members it works ok for the marjority of the time ?

Think you will find that many members are having the problems but do not want to moan about them. Have you done a survey on the problems ? I think not.
