Thanks Inspector............

I think I understand that.
What I don't comprehend is why anyone should have 10,000 Threads .......
I'm assuming we mean 'threads' as on this page?
Sorting your Surname Summary of course is a different thing and would need to perform without any error - I would hope!
Is it only on GR that we should need to 'clear cookies etc' ?
I don't do this for any other site I use..........

PeeEmm

This particular error has been around on and off for over a year now. It is volume related, not a fault with a specific activity, so can occur almost anywhere on the site.

My experience shows that it is more likely to happen when the volume of data that the system has to process in order to comply with the members action exceeds a certain critical amount.

So someone with over, say, ten thousand threads to their name is likely to get it regularly when using 'My Threads', whereas if you only have one thousand, then it is unlikely.

I used to get it all the time when trying to sort my Surname Summary, although it has been less frequent of late.

Keeping your PC and browser up to date and cache and cookies etc cleared out is always good practice but in this instance the error is coming from GR, servers which are timing out before the action is completed.

Hello Joy

Just checked, and found that my threads are working OK :-)
But then I only have a few - I expect you have many ;-)

I can see my tree again! whoopee! :-D

That's working, except for adding parents to someone........ when the parents already exist on my tree...... that DOES NOT WORK!!!!!

I tried sending a contact message to another member...... clicked SEND, nothing happened. Clicked again, nothing happened. Clicked again, nothing happened. Tried looking at Sent Messages, got nothing. Forget it......... I'll go do something else, away from the computer.

Came back half an hour later, checked Sent Messages........ andfound that the message was sent THREE TIMES. That person will think I'm an idiot :-(

WHEN IS THIS SITE GOING TO WORK PROPERLY??????????

:-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P

PS ~ I'm still fed up and disgusted

For the none technical I reckon 99.98% of the users could work out that the load during a wet Christmas would be more than usual. Not GRU though ...

Basically this mess is being caused because Bright Solid cannot do its computer capacity sums. The same Bright Solid which has been appointed by Wee Eck (*) to run Scotland's root server. Hardly surprising as Wee Eck cannot do sums either.

Far and away the easiest way to fix these problems is to increase the server memory. It is cheap - 16 GB server memory is about £ 130. Maybe if the budget does not run that far Estelle and PM could have a whip round.

Believe it or not Microsoft ships a gadget that can be used for simulating the load on a web server so as to avoid various not available errors. I wonder if GRU/BS ever thought of using it?

Or even RTFM.

Hello Scozz,

I am really sorry you are still unable to see your tree. I have reported this again to the tree team this morning.

I know that the recent problems have been server related. One of our servers had become overloaded. The capacity was increased yesterday and the tree was working again for a while.

It does concern me that you have been unable to see your tree at all though since before Christmas. Whilst there have been times when the tree was unavailable, the tree has been working properly for much of the time.

Last night we saw a different error message, which the team are looking into at the moment.

I can only apologise for the inconvenience. I can assure you that we are looking into this and we are doing our very best to stop these error messages appearing.

Rollo ~ I tried that, and watched the blue line slowly grow......... after five minutes I got fed up.

I haven't been able to view my tree since before Christmas.

Estelle! It's still happening!! I tried five minutes ago.

I'm getting very annoyed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gai Report 2 Jan 2013 09:29

Well Rollo,

I hope it isn't hackers because we assume that GR keep secure all our credit card details.

Would be a nightmare for all concerned if hackers got all those details.

GR "gurus"

I am NOT happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:-P

I cannot access my tree :-P

Most times I try to send a message to another member I get the Error Message :-P

I try to search for names and get the Error Message :-P

Half the time I try to post on the boards I get the Error Message:-P

Reading postings from other members, it looks like you're going to increase my subscription :-P

When I contact GR about the above problems (and others) I get the usual blah blah blah what browser are you using blah blah blah delete cookies blah blah blah:-P

Terms and conditions?

I must read them thoroughly....... see if there's anything that covers the time we lose on our memberships when the site isn't working properly :-P

Why bother sending emails to GR? The replies always begin "we are sorry you are experiencing these problems. We have tried to recreate them and cannot........." :-P

Fed up and disgusted :-P

an easier way is to hit the refresh button or F5

once loaded rhe tree will stay available until the next attemtp to open it when 503 error will reappear

503 errors are caused by misconfigured Microsoft IIS 7.0 servers.
They are also caused by IIS servers that have been hacked.
