May I suggest that you do NOT delete it ....... but change the title to read "completed"


After all, it was a contentious issue, and that fact that some person has delved deep into the finished threads to find it, does not mean that it has lost relevance.

It actually is also not a Stat holiday in Manitoba, Quebec, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland ....... but it is everywhere else.


BTW ....... being a stat holiday in BC doesn't mean that shops close, many do not. A lot do close, however.

There were about 4 places open in my local shopping area ....... about 40 or 50 businesses spread along 3 blocks along each side of the street, mainly small stores. The big Safeway was open, the 7-11, the local independent coffee shop/book store, and the Starbucks at the other end of the area.


Rather strange to see so many closed, even the 3 veggie stores.

But all liquor stores close.

I can remember when all stores and shops did close on Stat holidays, then the law was changed ................. but for several years stores did not open until after 11 am on Remembrance Day.



and the only ones in BC who seem to celebrate by over drinking are ................. those who go to the Legions.


That always seems strange to me.


I don't agree that people use the fact that Remembrance Day is a Stat holiday as an excuse to party ................ that most certainly does not seem to happen here, except, as I say, in the Legions.

People seem to use it more as a very quiet day at home ...... and observance here is getting more and more young people involved.


Do you have the passing of the flags from old veterans to either young veterans or young servicemen and cadets?



It's actually too bloomin' cold and wet to party on the beaches, and that's where people party here. It's also too early for the ski slopes to be open. :-)




However, I shall be careful in future to say "most of Canada"

Phil, I could not send a message to you because the error thing appeared. I shall forward to you an email that someone sent me a while ago when the poppy could be seen on one computer and not another - there were two computers in the same room, same browser etc - so maybe this is how things are now, some computers will still have it, and some not.

The poppy was removed in this lunchtime release. If you are still seeing it, then try F5, if that doesn't work, try CTRL+F5.

clicking on F5 doesn't clear mine, it is still there.

It was on mine too Joy. Try clicking on F5. That should clear it.

JKM - Just to clarify your post from the 19th, where you say:

As the Remembrance Sunday can fall anywhere from 8th to 14th November, it would probably be better to say
"and finished being worn on Remembrance Sunday (always the second Sunday in November) or Remembrance Day (11th November) whichever is later."

Looks like we'll have to send Margee round with the secateurs.

our observance is always on November 11 ............... which is also a Statutory Holiday in Canada

We wear them to church on Remembrance Sunday, the second Sunday in November in the UK, this year being 13th November.
