Mildred, I told them I didn't need the credits because, having joined before the site had records, I use other sites for historical records and was told to keep them in case I could use them to help someone else, and that is what I did :-D

Jax

I opted immediately for the Standard membership, didn't even think of the Free

and thinking it over, I think I posted the wrong amount above

........ I think my sub for the first year was £5, then it increased to £7, and then to £7.50 .... with the increase to £9.95 coming around 2006

so those were pretty rapid increases!!

Did you pay as soon as you joined then Sylv? or was it a case of having to back then?

I wonder how my end date managed to move from April to June then????

I could remember that we'd been given an free "extension", but not how long we got.

" 2 free months "?

- no.

A week, as you said, Mildred.
Recently when the site was down, another three days.

"were we given 2 free months of memberrship as compensation for major problems around 2006/7?????"

At some point we were all given a week, I know this as I joined on my birthday, and my renewal date is now a week later.

But I certainly never got 2 free months !

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Feb 2012 19:35

Mildred .................

My first sub in April 2004 was £7

Then it went up to £7.50

Then it went up to £9.95 around 2006

Somewhere along the way, the term of my sub moved from ending in April to ending in June ....................... were we given 2 free months of memberrship as compensation for major problems around 2006/7?????

ITV took over in 2007 ....... and that's when the sub fee was "frozen" (or grandfathered) for current members.

It would be interesting to know why some members got their subs grandfathered at £7.50 ......... after all, in those days there were only 2 kinds of memberships, Free and Standard. Logically, we should all have been paying £9.25 at that point in time.

BrightSolid did offer a ca 20% discount to all current members when their takeover of GR took effect around July/August 2010 ........ many, if not all, of us believed that discount would apply for the following 12 months of renewals. Instead, it came to an end after 6 months ......... so people renewing between July/August 2010 and January/February 2011 got the discount. Those renewing after Jan/Feb did not.

I remember some questions being asked ................ and the replies from GR being somewhat dismissive, along the lines of "it was only ever for 6 months".

If so, why did so many of us think it was for 12 months??

I have no idea why I was offered the discount in June 2010 and June 2011 .................. except it was in the email that I got from GR to tell me that my renewal would be due then

I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I have always had my membership set at Single, not Continuous????

It also cost me a fiver to Join "Genes Connected". My subs then went up to £7.50, then the last couple of years its been £9.95.

Why was mine raised when others remained at £7.50?

I've always been on continuous membership :-(

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 3 Feb 2012 07:38

Hmm. I didn't get the £7.50 offer and I've been a continuous member since 2003.

Maybe this is something that should be offered to all of us who paid £5 to join all those years ago.

I'm always happy Sylvia :-D

When I have more time I'll search for a thread about subs discounts and the rather, ahem, 'varied' reasons from GR and post a link.
I'm not bothered about a couple of quid p.a. it's the 'inconsistancies' that I find a tad unsettling.

Warwick

Warwick Report 21 Dec 2011 20:45

What is the real cost? When you look up on your account details no information is given as to what you have payed or are going to pay. It does say I have been a member since June 2006, but not if I had been an intermittent or continuos member. It also informs me that my membership will terminate at the end of the month, how does that tie up. Or is that the Platinum coming to end after only one month. A click too far. I will not go there again. Continual dropouts everyday, re-enter password etc.etc. Database works, then doesn't. Ancestors there one minute and gone the next. Which message board do you use to complain, How can you get credit for an irregular and inefficient service.

Island Report 16 Dec 2011 20:06

Sylvia,

I did wonder if Katie had got the price wrong which was why I questioned it and why I think the GR team should be 'singing from the same songsheet'

The problem with other members chipping in with opinion, especially long ones, and not facts in some cases is that the original query can get lost as so often happens and remains unanswered factually.

I'm afraid you must be very easily offended. :-)

edit "Island ............. the cost is £9.95 ........ that is what every long time member I know is paying. Katie got it wrong!"

Really? Except you, you now add! LOL

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 16 Dec 2011 19:54

Perhaps I should for the sake of honesty and full disclosure, say that I have also paid £7.50 for the last 2 years

.............. as a result of a bonus offer from GR each time when my sub was due to be renewed that took a percentage off £9.95, and reduced it to £7.50 so long as I renewed no later than 4 weeks after the end of my sub.

So far as I know, from comments made by other people, that same offer was made at that same period of time not only to me, but to every long-time member renewing then.

There is also the fact that there was an offer from GR for 6 months after BrightSolid officially took over last fall, that also gave that same discount to anyone renewing during those 6 months ........ which covered something like July or August 2010 to February or March 2011.

IMHO, that offer should have been extended for 12 months, because it meant that one group of long-term members got the discount, and one group did not get it. It might be interesting to know which group was larger ...... the ones who did or the ones who did not get it.

I know that it was not the offer I received, because my sub renewal fell outside those months.

I think that long-time members do get a very great bonus in basically getting the Standard sub for half-price .................... and maybe there is also a little added bonus that is added when we renew.

YOU were querying why Katie said £9 ..... I was attempting to say it was £9.95, and that Katie had got it wrong when she said £9.

I maybe did not phrase it clearly enough for you to understand what I was saying.

But it most certainly did not require your response. which I find offensive..

We can always chip in when we want to.

Island Report 16 Dec 2011 10:57

See Syvia, every long term member ISN'T paying £9.95!!!

I don't know why you took it upon yourself to chip in where only GR would know the answer.

Katie, I would like to know WHY some members are only being charged £7.50 - I paid £7.50 when I joined, have been a continuous member ever since but somewhere along the line you upped my sub to £9.95.

I would also like to know why some members recieve discounts and when others email to ask why they are told untruths about the deal.

It isn't about the price, that is very good value. It is the inconsistances and random conflicting reasons that you really out to sort out, in my opinion as this makes your set up look amateurish and lets you down.
