Surplus BMD Certificates

I suspect that many family history researchers acquire a few family-unrelated BMD certificates, during their attempts to locate some more distant family members.

I suggest that there should be a specific section, where GR members can post these certs, to try and find others who can find a useful link to their trees.

Hi Richard,

I believe that most members on here use BMD Share to off load any unwanted certificates.

It's a good suggestion though and one that would help many members.

I keep all my certificates even the wrong-uns. However, I do enter the details of ALL my certificates onto FreeBMD as postems. This way I may be able to stop people buying the incorrect certificate. Or if they find the info is correct they can consider purchasing the right one.

There are several sites where people can offload their unwanted certificates so adding details on here would just add another 'thread' topic for people to post their wants rather than just checking to see if there is anything there to help them.

The point is....Richard is suggesting GR have a BMD certs exchange.

people people people....who are these people?

PigLetsPal posted :-

"I do enter the details of ALL my certificates onto FreeBMD as postems."

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into that, and into posting details here.

So you weren't suggesting it as a site enhancement Richard?
You could have asked if anyone knows of BMD exchanges on Genealogy Chat but thanks for acknowledging :-D

Just to clarify Island's last point. Yes, my original intention was to suggest an additional feature, within GR Community Boards. However, following a request sent to FreeBMD, for some guidance, they suggested I should look at this site :-

http://www.certificate-exchange.co.uk/

Have looked thru various genealogy websites, but can find no way of adding certificate details for individuals not linked to my family. The data carried by those "surplus" BMD certs may well be of use to other researchers, so there should be some input channel catering for this.

One possibility might be somewhere on B-G forum, but not too sure yet.

I would be interested to hear how many people have actually found a cert on any of these share cert sites?

Nice idea but.....!

Have asked this several times but the answer so far is a great big ZERO.

This was recommended recently on another thread, but it has a sister site , with a link, for BMD certificate exchange. I haven't tried it, but it's free.

The problem is that what is really needed is somewhere where you can search by name for possible certificates

starting a thread for bmd certificate exchange or information, and people posting ad hoc on there will do nothing to help ............... it will become like all those postings on FB. People will post name after name, which will slide further and further to the bottom of the thread, and anyone interested will have to slog though it all.

It's about a month ago that GR offered on FB "post a name and you'll make contact with a relation"

yeah, right!

600+ postings later ......... and thread had slid so far down that no-one could find anything, even if they had wanted to slog through all those postings!

So .................. whatever is set up absolutely must have an index of names so searchers can quickly and easily find a name of interest.

I'm sorry, but I just do not see that capability on these boards on GR.
