What have you done to this site??? It is completely unfit for purpose. I would think that most people would be considering other sites that have the subscribers in mind and not a load of trendy nonsense :-(

Bazz Report 16 Feb 2012 16:00

Contrary to the statement at the top of this board Suggestions/add topic - GR seems to be taking no notice at all of members views
They are determined to plod on regardless with this so-called "new improved tree" which is, to my mind a complete non -runner

Bazz

Bazz Report 16 Feb 2012 16:38

PP
Do you not think we have already made our views known to GR ? - they don't take anything on board as far as I can see
And as for members changing their minds about the new format, I have yet to see any evidence of that

Oh Dear, Oh Dear.

We had exactly the same whinges when the current tree was introduced a couple of years back. So how come it is suddenly OK!?

Then there was the same whinge 4 years ago and then again 6 years back when the previous updates were rolled out......!

For goodness sake get a life. It moves on......!

Phil Moir has said

" Unfortunately the old tree just cannot be maintained in its current state and facilitate some of the changes coming, such as multiple trees, security options, better printing, alternative displays, etc., "

At the risk of annoying anyone, he should know, that is his job.

I don't think it's a case of making the site 'trendy'( though I can't count the number of times I have seen it described as outdated, old fashioned etc) but if it needs to change to keep up with other sites or to function properly in the future, then one has to either stay and work with the differences...or not.

George

George Report 17 Feb 2012 09:25

If one of the reasons for the chang in format was to facilitate better printing then they've totally failed, as now I can't print my tree on either format.

Kense

Kense Report 17 Feb 2012 09:50

If you bothered to read Phil's blog or Rose's extract you would see that the printing improvements are coming they are not available now.

As has been said before the old tree is no longer fit for purpose and just has to be superseded.

George

George Report 17 Feb 2012 11:07

Phil states that thier next job is to work on the print options, he dos'nt say the print facility has been suspended. If this is the case then they should tell us so we're not wasting time trying find out why we can't print our trees.

Kense

Kense Report 17 Feb 2012 12:45

I don't think they have been suspended, they just don't work yet for the new tree. They didn't work for many people with the old tree which is one reason why it is being replaced.

Caroline Report 17 Feb 2012 20:09

I don't mind change....when it works.
I had no problem with the old tree including printing, now I can not access the records etc on my timeline on almost all the people on my tree (yes I have told them and each time I'm talked down too and told try this try that and it doesn't work), nor can I print either the new or the old tree now.
Considering how much I pay each year I am not getting my money's worth at all, surely they could have tested the new tree better or only made a few "improvements" at a time.

"Considering how much I pay each year I am not getting my money's worth at all, surely they could have tested the new tree better or only made a few "improvements" at a time"

Actually the Tree software on GR comes for free. It isn't something that you have to pay for.....!

Caroline

Caroline Report 18 Feb 2012 00:51

Obviously I'm being ripped off then IGP.
I have to re new soon and I'm told I have to pay GBP 79.95 pa.
Granted I can access this site for free and have limited use of the services OR I can pay and have more use......when it works.
Please don't try to be all smart and post like you did it's not needed.
I do pay for a service which they are failing to provide in full right now, therefore I am not getting my moneys worth right now.
If you have no problems then that's great but I am not alone in having problems.

I am finding this site is still completely "fit for purpose" as it was originally intentioned to be used for...to allow descendants to be in touch with other distantly related relatives and enable to share information, photos etc...which has been and still is invaluable to me.

I have seen the tree changes through the years and yet again I have no problem with the new format.

Caroline, I'm sorry but I am struggling to understand which site you are having problems with, simply because on this thread and another I have seen you post on that you are due to renew at a cost of GBP 79.95 p.a.

Is it the Genes Reunited site on which you are struggling to print your tree?
Please do not feel as though you are being talked down to when you report a problem. I realise that there have been a few 'teething problems' but I appreciate that it must be difficult to develop a site which runs efficiently on all operating systems.

I have had intermittent problems logging in to the homepage, but to help the GR development team I added to another thread on which I detailed that I am using a Mac, info. on my operating system, and the browser I am using. Treat any questions or suggestions like a questionnaire which evaluates and then hopefully improves the user experience.

I do agree with Inspector Green Pen - where would we be without change?
(a topic on its' own I think!)
Edit - I think my IGP comment belongs to another thread

I guess I'm glad I joined when I did and kept my membership up.

I think I get great value at my standard membership price of £9.95 p.a.

I'm okay with the new tree too.........once I'd overcome a few 'user' errors..... :-D

And as a Platinum member who has been unable to access all of the records for quite a while now; unable to attach records; unable to print from either the old tree or the new tree; unable to view the timeline on the new tree etc etc etc I still stand by the fact I am not getting the full service to which I have paid.

To Crystal Tips it is this genes site that I am having problems with, as are many people right now. I am not against change, even though it may seem that way right now to some. I am against change when it not only doesn't work but fails so big time for many. I am pleased that you and many others are not having problems. I tested the new tree before they opened it to all, and I had the problems I have now and reported as such at the time.

To Cynthia I totally agree those on the grandfathered clause are very fortunate, and I hope it last for a lot longer for you. This is your good fortune for getting in much earlier.

Caroline

Caroline Report 18 Feb 2012 20:16

I have done all that you suggest already. One person told me to get Goggle chrome....it didn't work. Another told me not to use Chrome as that was the problem.
As for time line they can see it can't understand why I can't see it, no other help available right now other than it may be something they're not aware of at present. I can see the time line on a few people but mostly not available, so the fact it comes up on some and not on others seems to prove it's not my softwear/computer at fault.
Thank you for your help but it is an ongoing problem which you are lucky enough not to be affected by right now.
edit this was in answer to a message which seems to have been removed now, hence it doesn't make total sense

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 18 Feb 2012 20:30

As far as Browsers are concerned, I use Firefox for 99% of the time, IE otherwise. I have Chrome installed but only as contingency if IE or FF gets corrupted. As long as you up to date versions and make sure the cache is cleared regularly all should work.

For me, the GR tree is a means for listing my names to enable contact with other members, so I don't get too worked up as long as I can search and navigate around members trees. Can't advise on Timeline as it isn't something I have ever used.

Caroline

Caroline Report 18 Feb 2012 20:37

Obviously that is part ;if not all; of the reason you are not having the same problems as others then, as you do not use all of the services .
I have in the past used this site to access records and census etc as I am unable to attend any place in person to gain this information in the UK.
Good luck with your tree.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 18 Feb 2012 20:46

I went to check the lifeline on several names in my tree - new format.

Odd, I couldn't see one for my husband..........oooooer....

Then I discovered that I had to use the slide bar at the side.

It was there all the time. doh!

There were several that were below the 'Plimsoll Line' so to speak. :-D
