I don't want them to add new wonderful (?) features bar one. I just want it to work now the old builder has gone. When and if they do get it to work again then my (strong) suggestion would be for the development team to go away for a while ...

So after much waiting I succeeded in exporting a GED file ( 2 days).

Using Firefox 14.0.1
Added an interesting if remote male rellie.
OK
Added partner
SHOCK :-0
two extra wives (same added) and another guy of the same name to boot.
Repeatable error same as others have experienced.

After a bit of faffing about managed to delete the extras, ending up with just one wife. I could add some ribald comments here but would probably get arrested for something or the other ;-)

And they are truly looking into it?
BOF ( French word for not v pleased, do not use to the traffic police this summer)

I would like them to support cousin, 2nd cousin marriages but if they cannot even get the code working to add a spouse then that would obviously be a bit beyond the ken of PM.

I still cannot see what was wrong with the original data entry, all in one place. The two stage process with the "edit" box hald invisible is slow and clunky. It takes AGES compared to the old method. Moreover it does not work and is probably part of the reason for the extra wives and wot not.

Dubious about the date format - what happens when a UK style date is exported to GED and then imported into, say AY ? Most likely not what you want. Have they tested this?

Have they tested anything?

I thought this sort of suck it and see software development went out of style back in the 1980s. Real blast from the past.

:-P

Got a very nice email from Katie

She is going to advise the team about my 1-73 (sorry, I thought it was 75). I should have A-Z soonish. Possibility of Other Trees being listed by surname instead of forename.

They're working on it

I explained to Katie in detail what happened when I added someone to my tree, who was then duplicated. Looking into that one also.

They're working on it

Hello William, I am sorry to hear that names are being duplicated as you add them to your tree. Please could you contact the support team and send them full details of where this has actually happened in your tree? There was a bug adding names, but this was fixed a couple of days ago. The address for the support team is [email protected].

Kind regards,

Estelle

William,

I've just been going as nuts-in-May as everyone else re duplicating people. I had already hit the 'add' & 'delete' buttons below the selected person successfully or perhaps not always so successfully but... The problem was adding more info after and making it stay there as the 'Save' button at the bottom of the panel was not doing the trick.
So I hit the 'edit' button (between 'add' & 'delete') and now the person is no longer duplicated - everything in the panel becomes active and you change what you want and at the end hit 'Save'. Gosh I am SO pleased!!

Catherine, when you set Compatibility View for a web site it continue to operate whenever you visit that site. So if you have IE9 and the site is designed for IE8 then you probably need to set Compatility View for that site.

Genes a year of so ago worked for IE8 and some facilities failed for IE9. An example was the smilies which just displayed as the componebt characters when using IE9, so Compatibility View was necessary.

Recently IE9 seems to be catered for by GR so it should be OK to switch it off.

There is a problem in cutting and pasting tables (such as Ancestry census data) where IE9 copies the format characters. This causes a lot of line feeds when the data is pasted into a text file (such as a messageboard post). Compatibility View can be used to make the text have normal spacing but if possible avoid that by finding a pronter friendly version of the data you are copying. See thread http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1303773

Thanks Vera that was great - your reply arrived quicker than it did me to write my moan, the explanation was clear and - and - and it worked!
However does this mean I should keep this button 'off' forever?

Yet the joy of suddenly seeing my relative appear on my screen - I would give you all a hug if I could!

SuffolkVera Report 19 Jul 2012 16:38

Catherine,
The compatibility button is on the website address bar at the top (at least it is on my computer). It looks like a sheet of paper with a jagged tear across it.

Since I clicked mine off the new tree seems to be working OK.

Hullo everybody,
It's my turn now! I have tried using the new tree a few times but whenever I wanted to do anything other than browse such as adding information or using the Search function to GoTo someone in my tree - well in frustration I switched to the old tree where I could add AND save info, I could also search for someone and be taken there. Absolute heaven! This meant I'd only use the 'old tree' - the shock today when I discover the old tree is no longer here.
I see I'm not the only one to have problems with this Search function - where might I find this Compatibility button? Hopefully it would work for me too - I use Vista and like many of us use IE9...
I have been slipping away from GR little be little for lots of reasons - little or no help from the GR team (not the users), there is no reply and usually if there was the reply had absolutely nothing to do with my question. I am, today, no more than a Standard member and every 6 months toy with the idea of leaving.
Reading your comments it sounds as if I am not the only one...
Meanwhile, the Search function...
Thanks loads and good hunting wherever to all of you,
Catherine xxx
P.S. I have now tried to send (submit!) this twice and both times have had an error message... I shall pretend I am Robert The Bruce.

I've been using the new software for about two hours now and already I've had several bouts of uncontrollable shouting at the screen!I rely on this site's software for building my Tree,it seems to be duplicating every person that you add.

As I say I build my Tree here and periodically upload my Tree on two outside sites. How my Gedcom is going to appear after using this new software I don't know!

Regards
William Russell Jones.

Word on the street is that GR will be removing the old tree facility soon?

Just glad i removed mine months ago,

I have been happy with the Site for the first 7 years

hero to zero in less than 12 months

My membership runs out in December and i will not be renewing it GR is not the only genealogy web site and it's not the cheapest however it is now the worst web site i have ever subscribed too

ofcourse they have Vera

Clear your cache and lower your virus/internet security settings

:-P :-P :-P

The new tree has gone from a distaster to a catastrophe IMHO

I've told GR (and posted on the boards several times) - when the OLD tree goes, so do I.

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 18 Jul 2012 14:15

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 18 Jul 2012 12:55

Vera, From your post it looks like GR have reverted back to their standard reply to problems with the site by suggesting the everyone's browser is to blame and not GR

(clear the cache and lower our virus/Internet security settings)

And i thought they had deleted that from their automated? response

SuffolkVera Report 18 Jul 2012 12:35

I have now received an email from GR about the search facility on the new tree. They suggest I log out and in again, clear the cache and lower our virus/internet security settings (not keen on that one). I've sent them a reply telling them that another member has solved the problem for me via the boards and that they might like to add "unclicking" compatibility view to their list of suggestions for anyone else experiencing similar problems.

Brilliant Ken. Unclicking Compatability worked for me too. I still find it annoying that every other site I use seems to work perfectly without all this fiddling about but many of us are having to rely on help from good people like yourself to operate GR.

Many thanks
