Tree Searches by surname

George

George Report 28 Jul 2012 07:42

When searching for a particular surname why do I get dozens of surname responses of much longer names, by all means list them as alternatives on the left but bring back the old, more accurate, search programme.

As this is a suggestions board for the GR team I would think that George was questioning them and not the members.

I personally find your reply extremely offensive Sylvia.

I'm sorry Linda

but EVERYONE seems to be posing their questions on how to work their tree on HERE ...............

........... I just wish they would email GR

I really don't mind that you find it offensive .............

I'm just plain exasperated trying to help people when I can't!

In any case ........ I do not see WHAT suggestion George is making to GR on how to solve his problem! It is just a complaint as I read it.

This has come up as a suggestion before:

In principle Sylvia is right this is a board for suggested improvements. Complaints should be sent to support. However since the beginning of the year "Support" mostly either ignores complaints or sends a bromide. Consequently there tends to be a lot of posts here, to Genealogy Chat and even the Social Club regarding the latest problems. The suggestion is of course the basic "make it work".

Hey the old tree is back (again) though not from the menus !!!!! We are promised an imminent fix of the extra rellies bug - at the outset Gru and the usual apologists here denied that such a bug existed.

So as with most protest movements visibility and volume work. Sylvia should grit her teeth and get used to it. However I do not find Sylvia's post in the least offensive and she is right, people should inform support but a post here as well does no harm.

Some people in today's world are too thin skinned by a country mile. They should try Yesterday.

Remember some of these? Ministry of Peace, Ministry of Love, Ministry of Truth, Border Security, the People's Games, Support Department ...

Rollo, the old tree never left, anyone with a bit of computer savvy could access it. Whether it is wise to do so remains to be seen.

When I search a record, such as 1911 census,I have the option to search exact surname.Any chance you could do the same for "Search Trees"

Kense

Kense Report 29 Jul 2012 15:57

I got the impression that George was asking about the search facility not about how to use the new tree.

I find that using the search on the tree, it returns the exact surname.

On the other hand using the search trees function it returns results that start with the given surname. It is possible (by clicking the column header) to order the results so that those with the expected surname are first.

That's an intereting fault Thelma. I get the same results with 22 non-Wilkins entries. Have you sent this to support or theteam?

As far as I am concerned the whole point of this board is to make suggestions to Genes.

Thelma, the situation you describe above is a fault and needs to be corrected ASAP. That is why it should be reported. I have now done that so you needn't bother.

The exact search suggestion is valid and should be seen on this board by GR. However it is not the first time it has been requested and they haven't implemented it yet.

The reason this Board was set up by GR in May 2011 WAS originally to ..................

........ and that is how it was for the first few weeks.

Then, it also became the place for people to complain about non-functioning areas of the site ................ well before the tree fiascos that began August 2011.

The reason being that members either could not get through to Support, or got non-answers from Support.

HOWEVER .......................

.............. the plain fact is that there is NO GR staff member assigned to continually monitor the Board

Phil Moir looks in when he has a chance ............ but usually only manages to post a comment on 2 or 3 threads. Weeks may go by before he has time.

Estelle used to look in occasionally ............... but her position has changed, and she rarely appears on here.

That is IT

NO STAFF MEMBER MONITORING THE BOARD, AND THUS NO WAY IN WHICH MESSAGES ARE REACHING "THE TEAM"

So ............ a good idea .......... but members had so many good suggestions that morphed into complaining that GR seems to have given up on this Board.

It has now become a place for people to vent their feelings.

SO ............ if you are waiting for a response from GR to your complaints on here ................... you'll wait forever and a day!

The best advice is STILL to make sure that you contact GR through Support on here AND through the email address [email protected]

If you rely on this Suggestions Board alone ................ you will get nowhere. You'll just get responses from us, members like yourself!

Some of us might have worked out ways round a problem, and can suggest that ................... but that is NOT getting the problem solved.

so please do not stand on your high horse, and say "I do not feel that I should have to make any further contact."

'cos that will not get you any result at all.

sylvia

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 1 Aug 2012 01:08

so ......... someone did report my first comment as "offensive".

I'm sorry someone found it "offensive" .......

..... I was only expressing my exasperation at the way in which members are continually being put in the position of answering problems raised by other members ............. who seemingly do not let GR know of the problem.

Thank you to whoever RR'd me for making me have to think twice, or even 3 times, before I post.
