Did it 'desperately' need updating?
I got on with it just fine as far as the tree goes. The only issues I had were the automatic assignment of a father to illegitimate children and the fact that if you already have someone as a sibling and later discover that they marry into a family you already have on the tree then you have to give them two profiles. Very clumsy.

I can't see the light blue words - in the bulb light and the evening light what words I could see in the morning have completely blurred

There are now so many threads on the same topic that I'm not sure where to add my comment.

I sent two or three feedback emails about the beta site and like most other people commented on the brightness of the white background and the turquoise colour of the text. I think, in fact, GR have toned down the white slightly but I think it is still headache inducing. I already have my brightness down quite low and, while I could customise the colours to suit me, I'm not happy about making all these adjustments for this one site. Although I wear glasses my eyes are otherwise healthy and I have no problems on any other site.

I do think we should give GR a bit of credit. The site desperately needed updating and they are trying to do that. They have also put in place some of the suggestions that were made by members checking the beta site e.g. male/female icons on the tree and the little sticker on the boxes on the tree that indicates record and tree matches has been changed from a glaring bright red to a more acceptable purple.

I am using IE9 and maybe I am one of the lucky ones as I seem to have everything I should have - tree is all present and correct, emoticons are there etc. - and I can move around easily and quickly so I am reasonably happy :-)

EDIT: Forgot to say I have also sent this as feedback to GR

I'm also snowblind! I certainly won't be spending as much time on this site as I normally would. My poor old eyes can't take it. I refuse to fiddle around making adjustments to this computer. Other family members use it and might not appreciate adjustments.

I have sent a very lengthy message to Genes telling them my problems with all the changes.
I remember the good old days when I used to log on to do research, now I just send feedback. Spent a few minutes showing my other half how awful the site was and that was enough to make my eyes ache. I' m lucky enought not to have any sight problems but this may change if the tree doesn't!

Couldn't find a background colour that I was comfortable with as it needs customising,

but may help others to change the font to a bold type.

Use Firefox, latest release version. Upgrades are free so heaven knows why people don't as there is a performance / security downside to not upgrading.

With any release of Firefox for at least the last year it is possible to install a free add-on called GreaseMonkey. This allows you to control the look n feel for any particular web site and a lot more besides. There is loads of help on the GM site for any requirement regardless of whether you are tech savvy or not.

Rollo there have been very few times on here when I have felt like throwing my arms around someone and hugging them half to death...But this is one of them! Thanks for the info I am now tinkering with the colour of the background and it is working ! :-)

I really don't think it should be necessary to have to change our pcs to accommodate one web site. When they run a Beta site they should listen to their users. It is obvious from all the comments that many of us commented on the brightness and legibility of the new site, why didn't they listen? Or is it a case of them knowing what is best for us. I definitely will not renew next time if these colours persist because after ten minutes on here I am getting a headache.

I agree. The exciting new update isn't! As one of the people with access to the new site, I sent feedback about the difficulty of reading the pale print, because of the colour and also the size.

They have responded by making the background slightly less glaring, but the font size and print colour are the same.

Rollo's solution is good, but it shouldn't be necessary and I don't want to change every website, just GR.

Angela,

make sure you email GR with your feedback if you are having problems.

Hi,
I was so happy to read Rollo's solution. Unfortunately the edition of Firefox I'm using is too old and I don't have a colour option. So, the 'exciting' new update has just given me a headache.

Sorry Rollo,

I must be going mad (or already mad if you ask the children) as I'm sure I wrote saying I was using a Mac with Snow Leopard software.

I'll blame my current mental state on GR ;-)

Also on facebook I put a link to the thread that jax started which Sylvia and others had told Phil they didn't like the new colours. I notice that GR have just commented on this thread.

They must have listened for once and so far I haven't been banned from their Facebook page.

Internet Explorer

Tools | Internet Options | Colors

deselect "Use windows colors"

set colors as you like - try text - yellow, background - dark grey, visited red/orange , unvisited - light blue (cyan)

now go to

Tools | Internet Options | Accessibity

and select the first three "ignore" options.

Select OK

You will now have a color scheme of yr choice.

You can also change the fonts:

Yes Rollo, I did read your first post about changing the colours and seeing I don't use any of those operating system I'm still in the dark.

I shall ask one of the kids as i'm sure they will know seeing we have tech savy kids nowadays I may as well put them to good use.

What disappoints me is members told Phil on the thread started by jax that they didn't like the colours yet GR didn't listen.
