Just wondered if the info I posted on the 9th of August was of any use to you?
You may have found a way of copying more than 1 persons details at a time on the new tree, and if you have i'd be keen to know how.

Duncan, that is very clear and helpful advice. I have been trying to do this for a while, as I have just rejoined again.

Patricia, your well meaning replies come across as clipped and a little bit patronising especially to those who have recently started doing this properly. That is only my personal interpretation but I hope it helps for the future.

Now, why can't I find census information that I've previously found on the 1911 census?

I'm not sure which steps you've missed, so I will run through them all.

Go to the other persons tree, (from which you wish to copy details), by clicking on 'View other trees' at the top of your own tree page. This will open a 'Tree Dashboard' pane/window/dialogue box. Inside this box you can select a SHARED tree to copy from, by running your mouse cursor over the name of the selected tree and clicking on it.

Click on a name in the other persons tree that you're interested in. Two small drop down boxes will appear under their name, 'Details' and 'Copy'.

Click on 'Copy'.

The clipboard will now appear with the copied persons details IN the clipboard.

Close the clipboard and go back to your own tree.

In your own tree, click on the person to whom you wish to copy details to FIRST, and then open the clipboard. Run your mouse cursor over the persons name in the clipboard and click on it. NOTE - as a minimum, you must have the persons name, whose details you wish to copy, ALREADY included in your tree. See FAQ's in the Help Centre.

This is where the magic happens. You will notice the details panel will open on the right hand side of the page with options in the panel to copy everything or just copy selected items by clicking os selected boxes.

The help centre says you can add up to 20 names to the clipboard but I can't add more than 1 at a time without things jamming up on me. I'm using a Mac with a Safari browser so there might be compatibility issues but I wouldn't have thought so.

Don't think I made myself clear - the GR old tree you could copy 5 names from another rellies tree to your clip board. Then paste them to your tree that is what I'm talking about. Saves a lot of time. My cuz in AUS has been doing bits with certs and when we agree we copy from one another. Have never copied what hasn't been confirmed.

Patricia - I agree with some of what you are saying - sombody has my own mum on ANC with a non existant brother - she has it 5 times becasue she hasn't deleted it from her tree list.

Sue, your tree may well be well researched, but is the tree you are wanting to copy from as well researched?

Having been into Family History for over 25 years, I would never dream of copying anothers work without checking every single fact first. Like Rollo said above there are so many tree out on the web that are nonsense as they have been copied without any checking being done.

My tree on Ancestry is private as I can see the public ones that have one of my Gt Grandmothers in are incorrect as they've copied stuff without doing thier own checks, even the spelling errors are the same!

Would I allow someone to copy my work......No!
Would I help someone to trace common relatives........Of course I would!

You cannot auto copy trees with Gru. It was also not possible with the old tree.

OTOH it is quite ez to do with Ancestry, at least up to about 1900.

The result has been an epidemic of all kinds of nonsense and many of the better researched trees have become "by invitation only". My favorites are the Australians born Sydney during the C16 and UK towns transported to the USA. Unbelievably this kind of thing gets copied and copied .....

Apart from the annoyances of the wreckers (stet) development team one of the major annoyances for many Gru members has been people hoovering up the whole of a well researched tree even when only a couple of records were shared. No wonder there is a lot of dark matter out there.

Always check each and every record yourself. Even the best researched trees sometimes have errors and omissions. Besides which you may find something new and interesting.

Patricia - I know what I'm doing - my reseach is very thorough. All programs have a copy facility but GR's has vanished

I don't have a tree on here so don't know if copying from one tree to another was possible with the old tree but why would you want to copy a tree?

How do you know it is correct?

What sources are quoted and can you check these yourself?

If no sources are quoted can you find the original record?

Even if the tree is from a relative you should still check the research before even thinking of adding the information to your own tree, for example when I began my husbands tree his Uncle told us he had done the tree already. Yes he had, but unfortunately he got it wrong, and it has taken us some time to sort it out.

Have I missed something. New tree- Can't see how to copy the info from one tree to another.
