All I DON'T want is a Ford Cortina! So very dated and not particularly attractive to look at.

Now, a nice new pearly white Range Rover would do nicely..... :-D

You are a lady of class and distinction, Cynthia :-D

I am just a simple boy who remembers the day I took delivery of a 1.6 Cortina with a radio. It was a Mark 2 and it drove so smoothly. And what fun I had playing music - Carpenters when in a bad mood, Elton when in a good mood.

You could grace any motor and make it look good, I feel sure. Even a Mark 2 Cortina :-D

It used to be so simple, to dial up a name and go straight to it... fantastic!
Your answer to this was:
"click on the tree you want to search and then click on list, then at the top of the list on the left of the screen their is "Search relations" function, as you type a name in it brings that name to the top: then...then...then..ad infinitum.
In the old format I could type in the name I wanted to find--no worries about upper or lower case etc, enter birthdate OR not and just click search. I didn't need to go thru somewhere between 8 and 15 steps. I have tried to find people and entered their names 16 ways from Sunday only to be told they are not in the tree when I know they are. This is garbage; but it's no wonder. I copied and pasted your answer above and if you notice one does not generally use the expression "their is "Search Relations" function". Do you not have spell-check or does this function you have initiated belong to "someone"?
If things do not massively change and improve before my sub. expires in mid Sept. I will not be renewing and will be switching to a site that doesn't treat it's members as if they have no right to retain what they have been paying for and been enjoying.
Simone :-(

Genes have started 3 new threads to channel what we all think. They are on the Suggestions board. I think that is the most positive thing I have seen since coming on Community for first time just over 3 weeks ago.

Even if I don't get my own way on the return of old tree option, at least they are obviously listening to our positive views for moving our beloved Genes forward. :-D

Simone, You don't need between 8 and 15 steps to view a person in your tree and you can type upper or lower case in the ( list ) section and theirs no requirement for a dob in the Search relations

You can also use the section with the details panel open so when you switch from on person to another you simply type the name in the search then click on that name

1, click on list,
2, start to type name in Search relations upper or lower case
3,click on the name in the list

Job done,

you can then go on and use the other functions to see that person such as Immediate family, Full, Ancestors, Descendants which is exactly what the old tree did,

If that does not work for you then report it to GR support

And please don't criticize my spelling and grammar,

are you using predictive or auto fix for spell checker? if so then turn it off it will interfere with your search criteria

I may not check my spelling and grammar before posting but i can use the new tree using very simple steps and i do offer advice to try and help so don't knock the messenger

Roy

Simone - just in case you were under the impression that the people trying to help you or who are making comments are employees of GR, they aren't.

GR employees have a golden star after their board name. An example of the star can be found here.

Simone, Roy
Go to your tree, click on 'Search tree' in the very top right-hand corner of the screen.
To search, in the search box there are 3 (I'm leaving the default in box n°4!) boxes:
1. First name
2. Surname
3. Year of birth
Possible to search with ONLY a Surname (big OR small letters doesn't matter). Enter surname, click on Search and all in the tree with that surname are listed.
The section surname must always be filled so poss to search for
a) JUST Surname,
b) OR First name and Surname
c) OR Surname and Year of birth (only 4 characters poss so it does mean YEAR).
In the list displayed, click on the name and the tree reforms to open at that person.
In fact it's quite similar to the old tree now - brilliant!!!

Ooops! After all that I forgot to tell you the compatability button has to be OFF or else it will all work until you have the list of names that you are searching for at which point it will just go 'splat!'. :-(

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 24 Aug 2012 15:01

Catherine, Thanks for that But I don't require any help as i said i can use the new tree using very simple steps and it does exactly what the old tree did but has extra functions mainly to do with directing members to the records held by GR such as bmd, census, ex

but your suggestion may help Simone

Roy

Added, Yes the compatibility view does make a difference, Hopefully GR will sort that out asap

Catherine

Catherine Report 24 Aug 2012 15:32

Well excuse me Roy but as it appeared to me you were explaining the 8-15 step Search method to Simone and I thought she would appreciate something a little more straightforward. I am sorry I must have misunderstood.
By tthe way it is not that the compatability ON or OFF makes a difference because the difference is if you do not use it you are doomed (so to speak).

Roy,would love to learn how it works IF IT DOES,where can i find the photo's i had on the other tree, and why when i ask for descendants of my 3xg grandfather
do i only have parts of the tree appear not even back to my father.i am sure we would all want back our old twin tub if the later one worked as well as your new tree. James Faill.

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 24 Aug 2012 15:55

Catherine, Sorry if i offended you but my reply to Simone was a direct response to Simone's post which had been taken from a post that was my reply to a problem that another member posted for finding a person in their tree on there tree page

Simone, had suggested that my explanation involved between 8 and 15 steps to get to the end of that search which is incorrect as indicated in my post 24 Aug 2012 11:30 above and only actually involves 3 steps and not 8 or 15

So i was not giving a 8-15 step Search method to Simone as indicated in my opening line (You don't need between 8 and 15 steps to view a person in your tree)

I was giving a 3 step search to Simone

If you had read my post correctly you would have known this

Porkie_Pie Report 24 Aug 2012 16:06

OK peter perfect

If you had taken the time to read my post correctly you would have known this

Roy

James, your photo's will be in the the details panel, open the panel then on the top of that panel it will say Details, Photos, Lifeline, Records

Catherine

Catherine Report 24 Aug 2012 16:12

Excuse my last remark Roy but quite honestly I understood that Simone wanted to search for someone and see their position 'physically' and not just as a name in a list.
If so she must then go to the tree. She has to decide if she is going to click on Immediate / Full / Ascendants / Descendants - click and then wait whilst the PC program gets itself together ; then maybe Simone'll want to know more about the person and have to slide the panel open and scroll about... So there are at least another 2 steps, lots of mouse movements and a LONG time. One slip and she'll have to start all over again...

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 24 Aug 2012 16:21

James, Immediate family, Full, Ancestors, Descendants and list The view you get are all related to who you are viewing at the time,

so if your viewing your gr grandad all the above will be in relation to your gr grandad,

Roy

Porkie_Pie Report 24 Aug 2012 16:29

The tree works exactly the same way as before, You only need 3 steps to find that person in your tree or a tree you have access to, If you then require to see that person in relation to Immediate family, Full, Ancestors, Descendants, list, you have further moves such as click on which view you require as you also had to do with the old tree the only difference is the slide out details panel

you can also drag the image on the page, click on the page and drag your mouse to where you want to view it

Roy

added, if your tree or pages are slow to load (more than 3 seconds) then you may need to do some PC maintenance or check you Internet connection and speed

Catherine

Catherine Report 24 Aug 2012 17:21

You write "The tree works exactly the same way as before, "
Okay, I suppose the people saying we don't think it does are just being stubborn and difficult. Oh yes - we are also computer ignorant (I refer to another post on one of the boards)...
And Roy, I'm sorry but sarcasm does not become you.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 24 Aug 2012 17:26

As both Simone and James are new posters to the boards, I will send them a pm on how to return so that they don't miss the invaluable advice from Roy.

I'm fine with using my tree , the only problem I have is that I have access to literally thousands of unrelated trees from members whom I have helped.
I am really wanting to get rid of them but, even though I delete the contact, the tree remains........grrrrr

I have contacted GR who say that the problem is fixed.....but it ain't!!

Cynthia

I don't think you are going to get your gleaming white Range Rover any time soon.

This tree really is a DeLorean and is not fit for purpose. I so admire Roy and Detective who are trying so hard to explain what the dials mean and what to do when the engine doesn't start.

How they both get their heads round it, I have no idea.

But I have always been told if you design something new and you want to sell it, it has to be very simple and very good fun. I cannot easily get this DeLorean car started and it is no fun to drive at all.

Have read this thread. Have understood some of it. I would laugh if I was not crying quite so much. :-(
