OneFootInTheGrave Report 23 Dec 2012 15:27

Hi Jeremy,

After trying since around 05:00am this morning I have just managed to get into my tree, if the last couple of days are anything to go by, I won't be in it for long :-(

As to a server failure, yes these things happen, before I retired I used to work for a large company with offices world wide and if a server failed it usually took the technical manager no longer than the time it took me to have a quick cigarette for him to switch over to one of the back up servers, surely Genes Reunited has back up servers.

This past week has been a nightmare trying to work on my tree as it kept dropping out. I have a friend who is a senior techie with Brightsolid, he calls me several times a week and I will enjoy telling him about this latest fiasco, especially as he recommended the site to me.

Anyway I am considering not renewing my subscription as I only have my state pension and unless our present Chancellor of the Exchequer develops a generous streak I don't think I will be able to afford the hike in fees that are being bandied about :-(

Best Wishes,

GRU is hosted on the server farm of BrightSolid at Dundee.
15 37 ms 36 ms 37 ms []
16 39 ms 39 ms 38 ms [
Which runs Microsoft IIS Sertver 7.0

The same site is apparently going to run Scotland's root server:

so any trouble with the Sassenachs and Wee Eck and the marmalade battalions can cut them off. They did already, 503? Oi.

Estelle Advisor Report 24 Dec 2012 12:10

Hi everyone, the tree was fixed yesterday afternoon and it should be working properly now. We are really sorry it wasn't working properly for a while.

Kind regards and merry Christmas to you all!

David Report 26 Dec 2012 10:44

My GR tree has been locked since yesterday and cannot be updated:

"Import GEDCOM Your tree is currently being processed. Please wait until your tree returns to the ready state before importing another GEDCOM file."

"Your Tree Status Status: Deletion Pending ..."

the old tree format was better and easier to use. Do not like this one puts me off using it and subscribing ti site. :-( :-(

Roy Report 30 Dec 2012 15:19

Do you have any plans to introduce scroll bars on your family trees, or incorporate a function that allows for mouse-wheel scrolling in family trees?
This present system of left-click & drag down one page at a time is something I think Noah might have used in his ark.

Do you have any plans to fix the message inbox so that we can read a message then click back & read the next message. Or is logging out of the inbox & going back in to read the next message somebody who threw this new improved site together is proud of, & we are stuck with it? :-(

Barry Report 30 Dec 2012 17:19

Based on past experience, I will be very much surprised if you receive a response.

Roy Report 31 Dec 2012 01:54

Well I did receive a response .................... from you, thank you :-D
But I have to agree with you based on the response, or lack of, on the message boards.
My membership expires in May, & if things do not get fixed or we are allowed freedom of choice to choose the old setup or the new, my membership will not get renewed & it will all be academic.
Maybe if I ask too many questions they will refuse to renew it anyway :-(

The tree is not available, and has been functioning only intermittently for quite a while now, certainly recently since the apology from GR on 21st December , and importing a GEDCOM is not possible currently.

If I could get into my tree at all would be something!
Does anyone think that Genes takes any notice of members' opinions about the trees?

Wonder if we can get a refund of our subscription..seems a waste of money if we can't work on our trees????????

KenSE Report 1 Jan 2013 23:10

Once you get the Error 503, your browser may cache that so you get it again. It can be worth trying F5 or CTRL F5 to refresh the display. I have found that has worked for me this evening.

I think the 503 results from a timeout which is happening because so many are using the site and the server capacity cannot cope.

Ken, Error 503 does not always appear. Sometimes it just goes whizzing round and round and round with just "Please wait...".

Time and patience run out.
