This evening your website informed me that there were no matches in the parish records of births or marriages for the name EVANS in Wales...
I think you have a serious malfunction in your search engine.

Kense

Kense Report 2 Sep 2012 19:46

Could it be that they don't have any Welsh Parish records?

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 2 Sep 2012 20:38

Or that a high proportion of Welsh people are non-conformist?

jax

jax Report 2 Sep 2012 20:44

There are plenty of parish marriages for the name Evans in Wales on FMP

Only saying that as they seem to share the same records

Hi Suzanne and welcome to the boards.

If you post your problem with names/dates etc on the Find Ancestors board, I'm sure someone will be able to help you out. You may find the Help Clinic (over on the left) helpful when posting a thread.

I think you might. I wondered why Cynthia was welcoming you to the boards, and then I realised you were a different Suzanne!!

I am also Suzanne, but so far no-one has copied my board name.

As I mentioned before Suzanne with 3000 posts last time you worried about people getting you mixed up with them....if you dont want to get mixed up with someone else add an avatar...it does'nt have to be a mugshot.

I always look at the number of posts before I reply to any person who could be new or has a name which is commonly used such as your own....I have seen loads with my real name thats one of the reasons I changed it...this was in the days before post counts, date of membership and avatars and the only way of telling was hovering over the name to see the membership number at the bottom of the screen

Suzanne with 3000 posts

OR

you could add to your Board name

that's why I am SylviaInCanada .............. there were several Sylvia's when I first joined, and I got fed up of being accused of having posted a nasty message or two, when I hadn't

so I first started "signing" my posts Sylvia (in Canada) .......... then I got fed up of doing that, and changed my Board name

If you act quickly, you might be able to snatch up Suzanne1 before any one else does :-D

or Suzanne the First??????

Actually, I AM surprised there are so many appearing, especially new members ........... I thought GR had changed the system last year so that no new member could have the same board name as one already in use??????

There was a time when even "old" members who changed their Account details would be told they had to change their Board name "because it was in use" ........ yes it was, by them! :-D :-D :-D

I sent the OP one of my messages to let her know there had been a response to her query - it has been opened but no acknowledgment.

Like jax, I always check the number of posts a person has made before sending them an alert message and only send to someone with under 20 posts - as a gentle reminder.

I am familiar with most of the 'old hands' on here so I certainly wouldn't be welcoming someone who has 3,000 posts to their name.......unless I had lost the plot! ;-)

Suzanne with 3000 posts

There are probably hundreds or even thousands of Suzanne's on here

Just because you have not seen them does'nt mean they dont exist..

If you do not want to take anyones advice I would just live with it if I was you

What if a Suzanne with a membership from 2003 starts posting? can she then say she was the first and everyone else should change their name?

Suzanne

Suzanne Report 19 Sep 2012 01:39

Hello Everybody.
My original post was not an issue about the name 'Suzanne', but about the surname 'Evans', which along with 'Jones', is the most common surname in Wales, yet apparently and incredibly there were 'no matches' for it in the Parish Records. This is plainly ridiculous, hence my original post.
Evidently, I would have had more luck had I searched for the name 'Suzanne'...

Hello Suzanne 3 posts and welcome to the madhouse :-D

As I said before, if you give the details of who/what you are looking for on this thread, someone may be able to help you. Jax is pretty good at searching. No. Jax is VERY good at searching. :-D

Understand all the points made about non-conformity in Wales etc. But it really is daft that the search engine find no EVANS at all. There is plenty about EVANS/IFANS/BEVAN and other alternative spellings on other sites. Plenty on Mormon IGI which would probably not be expensive for Genes to buy from Salt Lake City. In fact, the Mormons have made a very creditable attempt to list Welsh names pre about 1800 when last names were partonymic.

Once or twice I have tried to use the search facility on Genes and have been so very disappointed. If it was any use at all, I would have upgraded to Diamond. But you cannot even find families on the 1881 census that you have found on Family Search census back in 1980's. Often it is spelling errors - really stupid ones.

You will not find records if you enter WALES.
Use counties.
EG
Montgomeryshire
11,996 matches for Evans in the Parish Baptism records

Joy Report 19 Sep 2012 10:02

I think it would be helpful for fee paying sites to list the availability of records one can search.

Just as an experiment, I searched in the free reg site - http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/Search.pl for a baptism for any Evans in Pembrokeshire, and 390 results appeared.

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 19 Sep 2012 10:12

Thanks Thelma I know I have tried to search for Welsh records a couple of times with credits on this site and have concluded I would keep my money in my pocket. Will try again perhaps with county searches.

There is a problem still with Scotland being treated as a "country" whilst Wales is often not. But never have problems searching A***** which seems to understand Wales is now a country.
