OK Sylvia, I confess. I need to confirm where the business side of the team want me to post certain types of messages. I believe the following:

Stickied "Announcements" are featured on the home page, and may get featured elsewhere in time, so that we can distribute "warnings, special features, upcoming events". Announcements are meant to be short.

The "News" section is blog related, and is intended for giving greater detail about what is available on the site, changes and updates. It is not intended at this stage to promote specific news items elsewhere on the site.

Hope this clear things up.

PS We decided not to take the site down this morning while we carried out maintenance, but record searches will not work, and the site could well be slow at times. I am really sorry for this inconvenience.

Thanks Sylvia I'm glad you posted this as I wondering why the site was slow.

I really wish GR would put something along side the announcements tab to show when they post something new.

Phil

My belief is that a message such as the one re the site being down, or other operations type of message should be posted on Announcements, Suggestions, General Chat, Genealogy Chat, and Find Ancestors. Possibly also Find Living Relatives

My rationale:- .......................

most people do not go on Home Page

Most people do not check Announcements ............ especially now that the NEW indicator no longer appears.

Most people go straight to the Board that they are most interested in.

Some only go to General Chat, and stay there all the time.

So, posting only on Announcements means that most people will not see the announcement ................. and will go on FB complaining that the site is down without any warning!!

I'm only trying to help you!!!!

But you will note that I don't post those messages until very late in the UK day, and no-one else has posted them. Yet people are looking at them, and commenting on them ...............................

so, how many people had actually seen the message???

You're right Sylvia...

Normally I come on via a cached link (I know, I know!!) to 'my threads' then after catching up on any new posts on them, look at the inter-active boards in general. I only look at the Home Page or Announcements if someone has made a comment about them.
