Scozz,

You should be feeling very loved that someone else would like to see your tree unlike some of us who are feeling very lonely and unloved

Hi Scozz,

I am sorry this hasn't been fixed yet. I can assure you it is on the list of things to do within the next month or so. The way our development team works means that we can't fix this as a one-off.

I am in the middle of double checking all the ways members can contact each other to make sure that they see the correct page. I want to make sure that we are doing this properly at every point of contact.

Kind regards,

Estelle

Thanks Estelle. It's great to see you are reading the boards and taking on board what members would like to be changed.

Thanks Estelle, I will be very pleased when the default message has gone :-D

I took a while to respond because I've been away for a few days.

Matthew Report 17 Feb 2013 12:09

I had thought that this unwelcome change had been introduced by GenesRe, in an attempt to overcome a problem which I - and, I assumed, others - had been experiencing.

I find that fewer and fewer people actually reply to messages. (I've just spent some time pasting old messages into new ones, which begin: Just re-sending my message of [date]. If you don't have time to reply, may I look at your tree?) My initial messages are, I believe, always clear about who I'm researching, and why I'm contacting this particular person about it. In my first few years of GenesRe membership, I discovered a large number of cousins, but it seems to have tailed off noticeably in recent years - and I don't think that can be because I've 'nearly finished my research'! :-D

But it seems from Estelle's welcome comments that the change to the default message was introduced accidentally - which is not welcome. When I worked in IT, any such mistake would have been reversed promptly, even if it meant delays in implementing other benefits. (I sometimes worry about GenesRe's IT support - this is the only website I know of, where passwords are not case-sensitive.)

I do wish that more people would reply to messages, more quickly. But ... if wishes were horses, beggars would ride! Anyway, the sun is shining, and I'm going for a walk on the beach!

Matthew Wilde.

""this is the only website I know of, where passwords are not case-sensitive""

I have come across other sites where the password is not case sensitive. However are you sure about GR? It doesn't allow me to see my Account if I use the wrong case.

Sherry Report 22 Feb 2013 12:01

I dont know why so many people on this site get into a flap when they are asked 'Can I view your tree'. Many people just recgonise a possible ancestor which may give them and you more information. Isnt this what GR is all about? I dont think people are being rude at all its just interest! I have lost count of the times I have been asked to view my tree and I let them because it does no harm at all. Why put ypur family tree on a public website if you dont want anybody to view it. Bizzare!!! Sherry

Mary Report 22 Feb 2013 12:22

I have had some requests to view my tree or wanting information and am only too happy to help. Most people are very friendly and I've had interesting "conversations" with people who are not related! I do think people should reply to messages and I dont mind if it is a negative response, but a reply is only good manners. I am trying to find a connection for one relative (a Smith) so am trying a lot of possible Tree Matches because there is no-one left living for me to ask who she was/is. I know some people just want to add to their trees to get as many people on as possible, but always ask before taking information about anyone. After all, I am able to refer back if necessary to check if I need some information at a later stage.

In answer to KenSE's question: I had felt sure that I could log in to GenesRe, whatever case I used - and I've just double-checked that that is still the case - but I hadn't tested it against the 'account' section of the website, which you mentioned. It turns out that the password double-check, for the account section, is case-sensitive! I call that bizarre.

Sherry ~ I have no problem sharing information with others.

SHARING is the word.

But these messages come from people who give no information. I have no idea who they are looking for!

If they SHARED with me, I'll look at the info, if they have a connection I might open my tree, but will not open it if there is no connection. I certainly will not open my tree to the requests from people who DO NOT SHARE.

I have lots of contacts who can see my tree, and I can view many other trees.

I had a request a few weeks ago. On checking, there was no link with my family, but I did some look ups & send a load of information to this person.
Not a word since. :-|

I responded to today's request, asked who the person was looking for........ they had no name, just initials.

They answered........(I've changed names etc).......... James 1871, Margaret 1873, Elizabeth 1874 etc

I replied, asked what surname he/she was looking for.

Obvious innit!! Was the response.

NO, it was not obvious!!

Charming.

I had one of these a few days ago. The senders tree was open, so i had a look. There were some people from my tree but different dates., Very muddled, but the fellow was around 80 years old according to tree., so i presumed he was just starting out.
I gave access to my tree and sent a couple of messages, but no reply.
Feeling rather irritated, after 2 days, i cancelled access.
Next day, i received another request to view my tree. I have just ignored it.
Think this should be got rid of as it encourages no communication whatever.

LadyScozz,

I take it your crystal ball was a tad cloudy today if you had to ask for a surname ;-)
