This problem comes and goes like the phases of the moon, but appears to be related to the amount of data that the member is trying to process. It takes too long for the servers to handle and inevitably times out with the 'Dreaded Error Message'

What are other members currently doing when it times out on them, or is it currently behaving itself?

Mine most frequent one is when working with Surname Summary, which typically involves sorting by column heading, selecting other member activity for the past 14 days and moving from page to page. First action usually works, second action sometimes then after that it is hit and miss.

I agree it is extremely irritating that one cannot remove oneself from a thread.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Mar 2013 21:23

Ken

what's that lovely phrase used by politicians ........................

I mis-spoke :-D :-D :-D

I said "threads deleted from My Threads ...."

what I meant to say was "posts deleted from threads showing in My Threads ..............."

.............. those threads, the ones that we have contributed to, are the ones that I think most of us want to get out of My Threads ............. especially if it was just a passing comment that we made.

You could once remove those from appearing in My Threads, by deleting your post(s) .................... but no longer!

Kense

Kense Report 20 Mar 2013 20:31

Actually threads do disappear from My Threads if you delete them. It is threads that you contribute to that stay in My Threads even if you delete all your postings on the thread.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Mar 2013 19:29

Maz

that has been a problem for some months!

last year, some people noticed that threads deleted from My Threads do not in fact "disappear" from My Threads

so GR, or whoever, telling you to do that ........................... it just does not work.

Just another little "mix-up", that seems to date back to the last update :-(

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 20 Mar 2013 10:58

Trouble is you would have to delete thousands of messages and or posts before there is any effect on reducing the time out issue.

Mazfromnorf

Mazfromnorf Report 20 Mar 2013 10:19

I have tried deleting my posts on threads but they dont go

Joy

Joy Report 20 Mar 2013 09:32

Yes, it would be great if GR could fix it.

It really should not be up to members to reduce number of threads (I have deleted some) / messages etc. It is up to GR to get its act together.

I have to agree that the Error message have been very noticeable of late.

It also takes an age for my Inbox to open.

Whilst I have a fair number of postings to my name, my Inbox has almost 14,000 messages in it , which may account for the slowness. I'm supposed to be whittling it down, but always find something more exciting to do..... :-)

Mazfromnorf

every time i post but i hit the back button and it has posted but it is very annoying

Thanks IGP and I'm glad you have been able to replicate the problem.

Now it would be great if GR could fix it.

InspectorGreenPen Report 17 Mar 2013 06:42

Yes, that's exactly what I am seeing, Gai.

This particular problem isn't linked to the browser you are using nor is it dependent on the time of day or No: of users logged on.

It is happening because the system is unable to process the volume of data required for the specific task in question with the resources available to it. It then times out causing the error message to appear.

When the volume of data to be processed is small, i.e. members with small trees, few messages or posts etc, everything seems to work fine. This is also borne out by the fact different members are experiencing problems in different areas.

I have a large tree and many messages, which is where I see the most problems. However, the volume of postings I have made does not appear to have reached the critical number causing it to fall over when I post, whereas members like Sylvia with four times as many postings as me presumably has.

Just seen the error message on the Surname Summary.

Tried to see what surnames have been added in the past 14 days and then error message

Hit the back button and decided to try again only this time for the past 7 days. Page 1 appeared and when I tried to open page 2 the Error message appeared.

SylviaInCanada Report 16 Mar 2013 21:33

Ken

I don't really understand that .............. especially as some people are having problems opening My Threads when others, like myself, have no problems at all.

The Error message is equally bad at any time of day or night for me

Kense

Kense Report 16 Mar 2013 21:30

I haven't had the error message for some weeks now but I have notice on some posts that the time taken is longer than it used to be. When you click on Submit and nothing seems to happen it is very difficult to refrain from trying the submit again, which may result in a duplicate posting.

Regarding My Threads, it is possible that they used to generate and sort the list when you selected it. Maybe now they maintain a list which is updated when you post the message which would explain the longer time. If so it will have to update the My Threads of everyone who has contributed or is watching that thread.

This would explain why it doesn't matter about the size of the thread being updated so much as the number of threads the poster has contributed to.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 16 Mar 2013 20:21

I can get onto any Board without problem

I have no problem opening My Threads

I DO have major problems posting messages on ALL Boards .......................

it is now about a 90% rate of getting the ERROR message ............... even though the messages have actually posted.

I have Mozilla Firefox ..............

but the interesting thing is that we all seem to be having problems with different areas!

I think I can understand how having a large number of threads in My Threads MIGHT affect the speed with which that is opened,

BUT ..................

I cannot see how having a large number of posts to my name affects submitting a post on any thread on any Board on this site. It seems to make no difference whether is it is a thread with 5 or 5,000 posts ......... the ERROR message appears.

wisechild Report 16 Mar 2013 14:27

For several weeks now, have had a problem, particularly on the Ancestors board.
Just start scrolling down the page to see who is looking for who & get
"The connection to the server was broken while the page was loading."
It´s driving me mad.
Don´t get it on other sites.
Genes seems to have a problem with Firefox, although why just on one board I can´t imagine.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 16 Mar 2013 07:20

Matters had improved over recent weeks but these time out errors are now becoming more frequent again, presumably any system tuning that was made only had a temporary effect and as data volumes continued to grow the problem simply comes back.

As mentioned on many occasions in the past the problem appears to affect those longer standing members who have large amounts of data associated with them, whether it be messages, board postings or trees. Less active members are largely unaware of the problem.

My bete noir is being unable to navigate around Surname Summary - around three out of four attempts to move from page to page time out and, to a slightly lesser extent accessing my Messages.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 12 Mar 2013 15:33

Every time today that I have tried to reply to a thread I have got the error message, I have obediantly clicked the back button to get another error message. I have then ignored it and gone back to the board, checked the thread that I was trying to post on and lo and behold the post is there. So the error message itself is an error. If you see what I mean.

BUT it is so annoying and a waste of my time. Can it not be fixed PLEASE!!!??

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Mar 2013 00:27

I am getting really really tired of this

80% of the posts I make get the ERROR message

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

and it is obvious that others are also having the same problem, judging from the number of multiple duplicate posts that are appearing on threads
