The only way that a site can 'remember' the page you were last at is by means of a yet another cookie.

Personally I would prefer to leave things as they are.

In the case of sites that appear to allow you to stay logged in - banking sites don't do this, incidentally - in reality you do not stay logged in at all, it is just that next time you access the site you are logged in automatically.

For this to happen there are two criteria that both have to be satisfied.

1. The site has to allow it, usually by means of a tick box saying something on the lines of 'keep me logged in....'
2. Your browser has to keep a record of your password, another cookie in other words, although most browser hold these separately from other cookies.

Although like many of us on all our favourite sites, I never log out (except for online banking)

But we really should. Not logging out is one way that hackers can access your information.

If I do ever sign out for what ever reason, I only put the first letter of my email address in and the rest is filled in including password....so that's no real hardship if it is like that.....some sites I have to think for a minute to remember what name or password I have used

Thanks Reggie. I do try to remember to bookmark the thread before signing in, but, because it's the only site on which I have to do that, I forget nine times out of ten!

Thanks NanaSue, Jax and Porkie_Pie. I'm sorry, I didn't make myself clear in my OP.

I have deliberately chosen to have cookies and history deleted when I switch off. I set it up that way back in the days when my offspring still lived at home and shared the PC - mainly so that they didn't come across what I was looking at for their Christmas/birthday on sites such as Amazon. So having to sign in is not a problem.

What I was suggesting was that GR consider adopting the same system as on most, if not all, of the other sites I use.

If I am reading a thread, for example, on GenealogistsForum, or Ancestry Message Boards and wish to post a reply, I click to sign in and afterwards am returned immediately to the thread I was reading. On GR, after signing in, I am returned to the home page and then I have to navigate back to the relevant board and then to the thread I want to post on.

It's not a big deal - I'm not a prolific poster and the GR boards move very slowly these days so it is not hard to find my way back to where I wanted to be. But the method used by other sites is just a tad more efficient.

Of course, sometimes having those few extra seconds to decide whether I really want to post is a positive advantage ;-)

If you have your PC set to delete history and cookies on shutdown then you will automatically have to sign in to any site you visit when you boot up again

Some sites auto sign you out when you close your browser or have left your PC dormant for any length of time as a security measure

Oh silly mare I am at times, didn't think of the anti virus - of course.
I'm using virgin cable, my friend has BT and son Sky.
I'm a bit rusty on adding all those site codes. As things have got easier I've got lazy. Need one of the boys who are more up to date on these things.

Saying that I've got to brush up - have to teach the mature seniors how to bank, shop and claim benefits online at the comunity centre - all paper is stopping. :-|

When I was using the free anti virus from my service provider (which was Virgin at the time) I was also signed out of everything when I closed down.

Now I am using Sky and Mcafee I do not get signed out, whether that has anything to do with it I don't know?

This was all in the last year with a brand new laptop Windows 7 and IE9 now 10

I've never known a computer just sign everything out when switching off.

I never sign out from any family research programs.I just click on the cross symbol at the top right of the page to close it down

To keep a site in the page you want when you return, is all down to the cookies left on your computer.

Depends on the browser you are using. Reggie has mentioned book marking the page - the other for Internet Explorer is adding to favourites.

If you have a more modern computer set to open a new site in tabs - when you click on a tab the page opens to show your favorite 8 sites.
4 of mine are family research sites and GR opens straight to the community boards

Try bookmarking

My computer automatically signs me out of websites when I close it down. I read the GR boards frequently but only sign in if I want to post. On signing in, I am automatically taken to my home page.

Would it be possible to change this to the system I find on most other forums to which I belong, whereby one is returned to the page from which one chose to sign in?
